Reading music?

Do you prefer reading with or without? If you do what type of music do you usually pair with your reading?

If music is playing while I am reading I do not hear it. I am oblivious to external stimuli while I am reading.

My strong preference is to read in silence. Any external noise is a distraction.

Silence. Or as close as I can come to it. If a noisy environment is all I have, then I use headphones with nature sounds or white noise to cancel it out. No music.

Yes, I have a pair of noise-cancelling headphones I use in noisy environments like aircraft. I don't listen to music with them, I just use them to get rid of the background noise.

Classical music or other instrumental music. Lyrics tend to distract me when I'm reading.

I thought maybe this thread was going to be about apps for reading music on an electronic device.

I don't generally listen to music while reading.

I love music even more than I love reading and I've taught myself to focus on music. I don't play music unless I'm just listening to it. Having it in the background would just teach me to ignore it and I don't want to do that to myself. I even avoid restaurants with background music whenever possible.

I guess if you're not a real music lover but think of music as part of your decoration that might be different.

I read, and have music going in the background at home, and I have my headphone on when commuting while reading. While I hear the music, I don't HEAR the music. Most of my brain is on the book. Unless a very favorite song comes on, then the music comes a bit more to the front.

Working in a noisy front lobby, I learned how to focus on my work and ignore everything else unless they need my assistance.

With or without. I have no trouble following the music and the book at the same time. I will tune into a favourite song and stop reading or wonder how long ago the album finished. And during my commute, the music covers the noise of the train and the surrounding passengers.

Silence. If there's music I'll go somewhere else to read. It's too distracting; if there's music on, I have trouble even getting through a paragraph. I can drive while listening to music, but I have to shut it off if I want to talk to someone.
