Help: Strange behaviour with export template on OSX
Hi everybody,
I experience a very strange behaviour when exporting books to folders: I have the following template set up for file export: Code:
{author_sort}/{series}/{series_index:0>3s}_{languages}_{title}/{series_index:0>3s}_{languages}_{title} Many thanks Mica |

In your file overview you have the same author in different spelling (WarnBrad, Warne Brad and Warner, Brad). You maybe export the wrong written author name before you correct the names. Delete first the older exports. When it happen again, you need again check your library for double entries (e.g. sorting by name/title or series will help to find theses entries).

Is that a result of the trimming calibre does for very long paths? Trimming the overall path, should help. Is there a reason to repeat "{series_index:0>3s}_{languages}_{title}" in the template? That looks like it will produce a directory per book and then the book will have the same name as the directory it is in. Dropping to just one will probably produce what you really want.

I checked the author and author_sort metadata in calibre. It's the same for all exported books.
But you are right, it's the name trimming. Any idea how I can shorten the title to only 5 letters? |

Aside : The latest version of Windows 10 (1607), supports long (32k chars) path names. To take advantage of this feature to avoid the truncation, I imagine calibre would need modification to detect it had been enabled. BR |

Thanks for the idea with the subtitles!
I run calibre on a Mac, so I'm not sure about the character limit there. |

A good point. Guess, Kovid need then to update the help with a hint too, as this will provoke problems and a lot of user queries in other areas like different operating systems, cloud services etc.

Windows has supported long pathnames forever. You just have to use special APIs for it. The problem is not windows support or lack thereof. The problem is that the vast ecosystem of windows tools/applications are often not long path capable, which means they sometimes cannot even see files with long pathnames. Before this latest win10 update, even windows eplorer could not handle long paths (I dont know if that has actually changed in this update thougj).

Ahem - what about the OP's Save to Disk problem with 'long' path names that are being truncated - should that be happening - on OSX?

It depends on the filesystem. IIRC on windows all paths are limited. On other OSes, calibre tries to create a file with a name of 300+ characters in the directory specified for save to disk, if it succeeds the limit is set to 1000.
