Can't sideload books onto Kobo Aura One
I just got my Aura One. The first thing I did was to download a book with Overdrive. That went well. I installed the latest version of Calibre on a Windows 7 laptop and copied my entire Calibre library to it from my XP computer. The latest version of Calibre doesn't work on XP, and the Aura One doesn't work with the version of Calibre installed on my XP machine. Anyway, I plug in my Aura One and use Calibre to put a book on it. It shows the book on the device and I can see the book is in the root directory of the reader. When I eject the reader (through "My Computer", not Calibre) the reader may or may not go through the updating process. If it doesn't, then obviously the book isn't in my library, but if it does then it says there's a problem and it can't open the document. I have the Kobo Touch Extended plugin installed and Calibre is converting the epubs to kepubs before transferring. I also have the Kepub Output plugin and some books in my Calibre library are both epub and kepub. Whether or not the reader updates after ejecting doesn't matter if the book has just an epub format or both. Also, after using Calibre, the book I borrowed from Overdrive 3 days ago disappeared. I turned the reader off and back on and the book showed back up, but now it said it was expired. You get them for 2 weeks. Good thing I finished it before all of this. I should mention that I also have a Glo HD and while using Calibre on my XP machine everything works flawlessly, so it isn't my books. I've also tried manually adding books to the root directory (that's where Calibre puts them, and there's already another author folder there with a kepub book in it). I've tried both making a folder and putting just a plain epub version both in the folder and in the root directory itself. I've tried this on both computers and nothing happens. No updating, and no books.
Powering off and on doesn't do anything and I've already done one factory reset. It cost too much money to not be able to use it. Anyone have any ideas before I send it back? Thanks. Last edited by Sir Loyne; 10-15-2016 at 06:38 AM. |

You have to start with a really simple experiment.
Can you copy a very simple book in the root of the Kobo ? With the file explorer ? Does it work ? Do you see the book there with the file explorer ? Does it eject cleanly ? Does the Kobo update after ? If it doesn't, but you restart the Kobo, does it show the book after ? |

Hi. Thanks for the reply, but I've already answered every single one of those question in my original post.

Ok, you are right.
Hmm, very strange. The only thing I can think of is if you date/time of the ereader and/or computer is correct. |

I've heard of that causing a problem with some things, but unfortunately everything has the right date and time. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Now it just keeps getting stranger. I tried adding a book using Adobe Editions on my XP machine and not only did it update, and the book showed up, and I can open it, but the other two books I added using the Windows 7 computer, both manually and with Calibre ALSO showed up, and I can open them. I can also add books using Calibre on the Windows 7 computer and they show up like normal now. I tried powering the reader off and on and, (and I admit I was feeling bold), I tried adding 4 books all at once. I ejected it and it started "processing content", but seemed to get stuck at 50%. After a few minutes I hit the power button and it went right to sleep, so I suspect the reader wasn't frozen. I woke it back up and the 4 new books were there and open without a problem. It makes no sense.
I am also now able to, while using XP, create an Authors folder in the root directory of the reader and drag and drop epub books into it. All I do is add ".kepub" (w/o quotes) to the end of the file name and I have all of the reading stats (book title in header, pages & time left in chapter, etc) like I would using Calibre. The only downside is that, in the "library" and while sleeping, the book covers are replaced with the book title. A fair trade-off to not have to use a whole computer just for ebooks if you ask me. I think the moral of the story is that XP is a better OS than anything that MS has come out with since. Last edited by Sir Loyne; 10-15-2016 at 10:13 AM. |

S, reload your books a few at a time. You might have loaded a corrupted book the first time.

I had repeatedly tried loading and reloading books one at a time with Win 7. I even did a factory reset in case the firmware was corrupted. I tried everything I could think of. After connecting it to my XP machine and adding a book with Adobe Digital Editions the problem was solved. I can add books with both Calibre on Win 7 and manually with XP. I'm not sure what the problem was, but it was only right after I connected it to XP that the books I added with 7 showed up. It might just be a coincidence, but I spent 3 hours this morning messing around with it and 7. I plugged it into XP and the problem was fixed in about 2 minutes.

XP file manager is a little more forgiving. Maybe reset Explorer in Win 7 and then set to view hidden folders and files. You also try an alternative file manager like Explorer++. Security in Win 7 is tighter than XP and some things cannot deal with that. However I am not having a problem with Win 10, so I am guessing it is a setting in your Win 7 Explorer.
