Calibre-server leaves temp(?) folder

I start the server in a Win10 command box and it seems to create a temp folder (calibre_eph8hd for instance) at the same tree level as the main database. Different name every time

When I close the cmd box the folder is left. Always seems to be empty

Is there a setting to change? Deleting manually works, but it is unexpected behavior

For me the temp folder is created in the directory to which I have the environment variable CALIBRE_TEMP_DIR set, which is C:\_Calibre\Temporary.

If you were to set CALIBRE_TEMP_DIR to the Library folder that would result the temp folders appearing there, when you run the GUI is a temp folder created in the same directory. Probably not a good idea to use the Library folder as a place to store calibre's temporary files. If you run Check Library it would report calibre_eph8hd as an orphaned Author

And you're right, the folder isn't removed when the server is closed. Possibly because Windows does not allow calibre servers started via cmd.exe to be terminated 'gracefully' . One of Kovid's posts in one of your other server related threads suggests this may change with calibre 3.0.

Not actually in the Calibre data library, but at the same level, so at least it passes Check Library

Just started to play with server since I read so many nice things about it here

Still odd - unless redirected by CALIBRE_TEMP_DIR, I would expect the temporary folder to be created at %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp

I can't recall where where calibre puts its default library, maybe %USERPROFILE%\Documents, which is a long way from %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp. But wherever it is, afaik, a server started via cmd doesn't remove its temp folder when the cmd process is terminated.

Don't get too emotionally attached to the server as it is now, the new one could be quite different

Indeed. As it is currently, on windows I would suggest running the server from within the GUI if at all possible, rather than as a standalone process.

Easy enough to do

I was thinking that I could integrate the CLI server into a script

Thanks

FWIW: I run a server against each of three libraries concurrently, sometimes for days on end without any issues at all. Use is lightweight - often its just to look at metadata, occasionally to read a 'book' - but no mass downloads over the air to devices etc.

Works like a charm.

Added : Another advantage for me is that I often want to run a calibre portable for experimental purposes, I don't like adding PI's or changing settings to my 'production' environment.
