Aura One - Sleep or Power Off?
I read every night at bed time. Rarely do I read during the day. Should I power off my reader each night when I'm done or just let it sleep?

Concern about wear and tear on the ON/OFF switch always made me let my ereaders go to sleep on their own in the past.
However, now with the KA1 I decided to try to optimize battery life and have been using the switch to take it to sleep mode. I look forward to dialogue on which is best with the KA1. |

Afaik power consumption is so minimal in sleep mode that it's hardly worth your while to turn it off each night.

The "auto-sleep" function works *after* a short period of time; all other auto-sleep covers/cases that I have bought for many different makes of ereaders and Tablets, including generic covers from Amazon over many, many years, have always worked instantly. The official Kobo Aura One sleep cover does not. Sorry this does not answer your initial question but it is more a guide to avoid Kobo covers. p.s. I am going to test by using the cover to "sleep" the reader for a few nights, then after recharge etc., I will be doing a power off each night. But of course, the time when the reader is actually powered off/sleeping may never be the same, so ... ![]() |

When you put the Kobo devices to sleep, it displays the sleep screen and after a second or two turns the light off. While doing this, it is also saving state to the disk, and if you are reading a purchased kepub, attempting to send the reading status to the Kobo server. This has changed in the firmware over the years. When the light was first added, it was turned off immediately, making it look like the device went to sleep faster, but it was probably doing the same thing I would be surprised if the other devices mentioned aren't doing something similar. The order they do this and exactly how much work is done will determine how long before the device is actually asleep. |

In my experience when the device is working properly I have virtually zero power loss from an overnight or couple of days sleeping. So I basically never power down. A few years ago someone actually tested and found in their experience that it took more power to power it down and reload everything on power on than was saved by powering it down.

I just let it sleep.
Here's the funny thing - sometimes when I pick it back up it automatically switches from sleeping to on. There must be an accelerometer inside. But it's not consistent, I would say it happens about 75% of the time. |

Normally I'd say just let it sleep, but with the bug, if it's eating your battery turn it off.

KA1 sleeping over night is loosing about 40% of battery. I´m waiting for a) the new firmware which is announced to fix the battery bug and b) the sleep cover of Kobo which is announced to be receivable from October 14. Last edited by WiBu; 10-01-2016 at 03:10 AM. |

I also noticed my Aura is losing a lot of battery while ostensibly asleep. But this only started when I started using the sleep cover. My guess is that there's nothing wrong with the battery per se, but the implementation of the sleep cover function is faulty. When you close the cover it goes to sleep, but the device is triggered too easily (when you carry the device, or God knows how) to awaken again. This morning when I woke up it was in the middle of a search I never performed, and the line margins had been widened: somehow the device had detected action on the screen even though the cover was closed!
I suspect *this* drains the battery, not any leak. So now I have the sleep cover, which I'll probably keep using because it also makes it easier to hold the device in one hand. But the sleep cover function doesn't work and just to be safe I revert to using the button again. I'll check, but I think if I put it to sleep manually I don't get these huge battery drains. |
