Problems converting docx with Calibre

Dear Authors!

Can anyone help me?

I used Word 2016 to write my book. Conversion with calibre to .epub works fine with one exeption: In the .epub, Headings (level 2 and deeper) tend to stand alone at the end of any page if a bigger image follows. Calibre decides to break page AFTER the heading to get the image on top of next page.
In Word, these headings are formatted correctly not to do so. When converting to pdf, e.g., pdf also is correct.

Do you have an idea, how I can teach Calibre not to break pages directy after headings but to keep heading and following image together?

Btw, I do not understand all tecnical terms in English and am a relative beginner...

Thanks in advance,

Benedikt

If you dont want an h2 to be at the end of the page, insert a page break before the h2 in word or change the h2 style to have page breaks before automatically. As for keeping large images and text together, there is no way to do that robustly in ebooks. You can use page-break avoid CSS properties, but they are only advisory.

Your reply is a real honour. Thank you, Kovid! Calibre is a genious masterpiece. I hope your work will pay out for you.

Yet I had the idea of page breaking before every h2. I had lots of almost empty pages with that. Not sure which I am going to prefer. What do you think is more convieniant for Kindle readers: Almost empty pages or headings alone at end of pages?

Cheers

It is a matter of personal preference, I think. For myself, I like to have a page break before a section heading, even if it means the section heading is alone on the next page.

+1 for Kovids way

I fix my EPUBS that come in as :
<H2>Part 1<H3>Chapter 1

to :
<H2>Part 1
<split file>
<H3>Chapter 1

The TOC is still ndented

I Split, but the CSS is another way
and remember the conversion settings the also handle what to do when sequential headings are encountered

Thanks for your reply. "File" has lots of possible translations, I found. I do not understand exactly what <split file> means at that place. Could you explain briefly?

Split file
some folk work flow is on one big file <shrug> , that is the place (your marker) the big file will be split in the end

I split into Chapter per file, which naturally starts a New 'Page' (pagebreak) in EPUB2

I agree. At least almost empty pages seem like an individual style, while lonely headings just seem unprofessional.
