Thumbs up Free (Kindle) Vanishing Point by Michaela Roessner [Sci-Fi Disappearance Dystopia]

Vanishing Point by John W. Campbell & Crawford Award-winning author Michaela Roessner (ISFDB, Wikipedia, Science Fiction Encyclopedia), is her standalone post-apocalyptic dystopian science fiction thriller where a significant proportion of the population has abruptly disappeared for no obvious reason, leaving the survivors to try to cope and rebuild society while trying to discover what on earth actually happened, while fending off encroaching religious fanaticism from those convinced one need look no further than the usual Judgment Day sort of explanations and should be adjusting one's remaining lifestyle accordingly, as you do, free courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press' Venture imprint, who are e-printing it from its 1993 edition originally out from Tor.

Currently free @ Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK and pretty much everywhere else that Amazon sells worldwide, since this is being done via their KDP Select exclusive-or-else program)

And this has been the selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day.

Because not only is it always a treat to receive sfnal freebies, it's also doubleplusgood to get not one, but two reprints in a week from Endeavour, and this looks like an interesting non-faith-based take on those Rapture-type thriller books, with some decent exploration of how various portions of the world might plausibly actually react and adapt (I also recommend the comic book series Y: The Last Man, if you're interested in such). And it turns out we have a vanishing smiley, to boot! <-- not actually raptured away, one hopes

Enjoy!

Description
90% of the population have vanished.

This apocalypse has nothing to do with bombs or some eco-catastrophe…

The World’s population has simply disappeared.

People woke to find their lovers no longer beside them. Children woke to find their parents missing, parents woke to empty cribs. Neighbors found empty houses, empty apartment buildings. Civilization collapsed.

Three decades after the Vanishing, as it is called, the traumatized survivors are still trying to cope with loss and loneliness: some, like the destructive ’Bounders, gravitate toward religious fanaticism, thinking that the Vanishing was Judgement Day, while others preserve the memory of lost lives by maintaining their empty homes.

But all is not lost. Now, the inhabitants of the former Winchester Mansion in San Jose, California have reason to be optimistic, pulling together to rebuild a secure life in an altered world.

At the House, a young woman, Renzie, is part of a team rebuilding society and researching the Vanishing. From across country an elderly scientist, Nesta Easterman, arrives with new theories and new approaches. Between them, they might just be able to salvage a new world order from the rubble.

But can Renzie and Nesta vanquish the ’Bounders before all is truly lost forever?

Vanishing Point is a gripping dystopian thriller, fusing traditional science fiction with a unique twist on the human condition.
