Aura One USB connection not detected
Is anyone else having an issue getting their Aura One to detect a data USB connection. In particular with a Microsoft Surface Book.
Anything else I plug into my machine is detected and loads fine. Old flash drives, printers, scanners, a USB 3 hard drive, etc. but the Kobo just starts to charge but offers no option to connect. If I use an intermediary USB 2.0 4 port hub it works fine and gives me the option to connect. Even stranger is a direct connection to my wife's Surface Pro 4 works fine. I have even done a factory reset on my Surface Book with no improvement. Anyone else seen this? I'm pretty sure the Kobo is at fault. |

I'm certain there has been discussion join the calibre forum on this. I seem to recall there is a power issue here, that the Surface does not have sufficient power from its USB port to support some devices.

If so, then PeterT is likely to be correct; the Surface you're using doesn't supply enough power on the USB-port. The hub, if it is powered by a wall adapter, does supply the required power, and thus the KA1 works. |

I had this issue last night (first time plugging it in). I used another USB cable (Amazon Basics) and the Surface Pro 4 recognized it.

Apologies I should have added that the hub is unpowered. The only thing it alters is the USB speed as it is older and runs at USB 2.0. Note the Kobo is detected fine on a Pro 4. It is just the Surface Book that doesn't trigger the connect prompt on the Kobo. Yet all my other USB devices are recognized fine. The Kobo should really be able to power itself anyway.

As already stated the issue here is not the hub. I mentioned the hub because in unpowered (or powered) state it fixes the problem and so adds information to my question. My issue is with a direct connection from the Kobo to the Surface Book. An unpowered hub will not add power to a connection although it may alter the speed (in this case from native 3.0 to 2.0). All I want to know is if anyone else has had trouble getting their Aura One to detect they are connected to a computer and provide the connect screen. If they do I can feel confident this is a firmware issue that will likely get fixed. I If not then it may be hardware and I will try to get it swapped out by Kobo. I'm an IT support engineer of 10 years and programmer of 4. I just wanted a little help from fellow owners to narrow down a source of a problem. That's all. |

Not really a dealbreaker as all I have to do is replug the cable when it happens... Last edited by frostschutz; 09-11-2016 at 07:12 PM. |

I cannot successfully connect the Aura One to my Linux running PC either. First time I have an issue w/ an USB device.
Works fine w/ my Chromebook which makes me think it's a Kobo firmware issue. |

What the firmware does is differentiate between PC and pure chargers... so if I use my Samsung smartphone charger, the connection popup never comes up... (which I previously made use of in my remote control / page flipping experiment https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=257511 ) . Maybe my USB hub does the same thing whatever my charger does to allow smartphones to charge faster and the Kobo confuses that with a pure charger? It would still be the hub at fault (kinda). Or blame USB for not having a better standard for chargers.
Firmware could certainly be changed to always show connect popup no matter what. Not sure if that is a good idea for a fix. Edited my post above to clarify I'm talking about my H2O here, I don't have an Aura One sorry ![]() |

What is also odd if I have a Belkin travel surge protector that has two USB charging ports on it. When I connect my Kobo to it for charging it detects it as a data connection and gives me the connect screen, and that is just a charger with not data component to it. Yet nothing on my Surface Book. |

On my computer (a Dell Precision 7510 laptop), the KA1 works fine. After I connect it to one of the USB-ports (all are 3.0), the connect screen pops up within 1-3 seconds. If you wish, I can also test on my older laptop (Dell Latitude E6500, all USB 2.0 ports), but I suspect no problems there to be honest.
