Aura One: shelf management

I bought the Aura out of curiosity. I already had the first Aura (the 6'8" one).

With Calibre, I uploaded all of the books in my Calibre library, which more or less duplicates the library on my first Aura. Usually, if I specify a shelf for a book in Calibre and then sideload it onto the device, the Aura recognized that.

The Aura One does not seem to recognize the shelves. So now I'm stuck with nearly 500 titles, 98 pages of books on the Aura, all unsorted. There's no easy way to search in this list, AFAIK. So if I want to look for a particular title, I have to browse through 98 (ninety eight!) pages of books before I get to it.

Really.
Is there any easy way to apply the shelve sorting I'd already applied in Calibre to these books. That will finding particular books on the device quite a bit easier for me.
The interface for shelving on the device itself is nice for single books, but not for sorting umpty books. Let alone if there's hundreds.

Okay, correction: it *does* have a search function, which seems . May be even better than shelving (though I still would have liked to have kept those shelves, the better to alert myself to books that I've forgotten I even had on there...).

Sorry to have been a little too quick on the draw.

One of the threads had a comment about a work around for collections not working correctly, but I'm not sure which one. Will try searching a bit later and post back if I find it.

Within each shelf (collection) you have the same sort options as you do in your full library (recent, title, author, file size, file type)

The Kobo's library search actually works really well. Instead of using shelves I just search by author, title or series and find the book I want that way.

That said have you verified that your device is setup with all needed settings according to the Wiki post on Shelves/Collections?

I don't remember an ereader with a 6 foot 8 inch screen. JSWolf would approve there aren't many pockets it would fit in

The collection management should work the same on the Aura ONE as on the other devices. It is working OK with firmware 4.0.7523 on my Glo HD. But, I have had another report of this on an Aura ONE, so there must be something wrong.

Can you restart calibre in debug mode, connect the device and let the device jobs run. Then close calibre and post the debug log. I should be able to work out what is going wrong from the logs.

You can add multiple books to a collection. Form collections list, long press on the collection and select the manage option from the menu. Or while viewing the collection, press the menu icon at the top of the book list and select the manage option. This shows the books currently in the collection with a checkmark. Press the check to remove. To add books, press the "Add books" at the top of the list. Within this, you can press on the plus on each book to add them. Or, you can use the search to find books to add. Once done, press the done or save button at the bottom to save the changes.

Thanks. Silly of me about 6.8".
Running in debug mode now, but where will I be able to find the debug log?

Anyway, if I try to change the shelving of a book on the device now, Calibre says:

calibre, version 2.66.0
WARNING: Failed: Kobo database version unsupported - See details

Your Kobo is running an updated firmware/database version. As calibre does not know about this updated firmware, database editing is disabled, to prevent corruption. You can still send books to your Kobo with calibre, but deleting books and managing collections is disabled. If you are willing to experiment and know how to reset your Kobo to Factory defaults, you can override this check by right clicking the device icon in calibre and selecting "Configure this device" and then the "Attempt to support newer firmware" option. Doing so may require you to perform a factory reset of your Kobo.
Device database version: 129.
Device firmware version: (4, 0, 7523)

Just do as it says and select the "Attempt to support newer firmware" option. I did this and am managing my Aura One shelves through Calibre. Just make sure to follow the directions on the wiki posted above.

Okay, thanks.
But did you in fact have to do a factory reset?
I prefer minimum hassle solutions. :-)

Will there come a point where Calibre knows that updated firmware and both work together again "out of the box", as it were?

I did not have to do a factory reset to get collections working, no.

The next version of Calibre should recognize this firmware by default, but there is no harm currently in checking the box that enables it now.

It isn't telling you to do a factory reset. It is a warning that is saying if there are problems, you might need to do a factory reset to recover. It then goes on to say tell you how to enable to full function if you are willing to accept the risk.

But, there is no risk with firmware version 4.0. There are no changes in the database with this firmware that affects how calibre interacts with the Kobo devices.

Yes. I do this as soon as I know what the firmware version is and have made any necessary changes. It usually happens in the next calibre release, but I occasionally get it in the previous release. And that leads to...

Restart calibre and you should be prompted to update to 2.67. That has the changes to recognise the firmware version 4.0.

Okay, thanks.

Now that my 400+ books are already on the device, without any shelves assigned to them (although they were in Calibre), I guess there's no simple way to synchronize their shelving with that of the Calibre library? I'll either have to shelve them manually, or delete the books and re-load them from Calibre to get the shelving take effect?

Not really. Configure two things:
  • Columns you want to transform in collections/shelves in the device
  • Automatical metadata management from calibre

With these two things, when you connect the device again to calibre, the shelves will be created and filled with the proper books.

If you have the configuration done properly, every single time you connect to calibre, the collection management is done. That means new collections are create or deleted as appropriate and any changes for individual books are done.

Terisa gave the points to look at. The details and some suggestions are in https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kobo...nd_Collections.
