calibre contains no kernel mode code, so it cannot crash the entire system even if it wanted to. If your entire system is crashing then you likely have some much more severe problems -- most likely some failing hardware.

Hi,
I finally managed to use it, installing a fresh new downloaded copy of Calibre 2.66.0. I guess there was a problem during the first download ... Many many thanks for your help, and for giving us this great software. Regards. |

Hi again,
I am sorry to announce that there is really a nasty bug with Calibre on an OS X system. I found that this bug, causing Kernel Panic, comes everytime when I launch Calibre while my USB2Lan adapter is connected. If I disconnect this USB2Lan adapter (0x8153:0x0bda) before launching Calibre, there is no more KP. Hope you'll be able to fix that nasty bug ! This is the USB2Lan adapter causing Kernel Panic with Calibre on Mac OS X 10.11.6 :
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/U3-09...8.0.115.LsNhAm On Windows 10, there is no crash, even if this adapter is connected (seen as "Realtek USB GbE Family Controller" with ID "USB\VID_0BDA&PID_8153&REV_3000"). Regards Last edited by tahitibub; 09-03-2016 at 07:24 PM. |

As Kovid said before, calibre contains no kernel code and is physically incapable of causing that crash.
The problem is going to be somewhere in the interaction between the kernel driver for that adapter, and the various pieces of software which calibre makes use of -- none of which are under calibre's control and several of which are part of OSX itself. ... Apparently, calibre can activate this bug by running certain codepaths which aren't usually accessed on your computer. But the most that anyone here can do is help you figure out where that interaction is taking place, so you can report a bug to whichever project is responsible for the real cause of that crash. Hopefully, someone has an idea... |

@eschwartz
Thanks for this explanation. For the time being, I'll check to unplug this adapter before using Calibre. If I can help developpers to find the bug, I'll try to do my best. Regards |

I've had similar bugs and crashes as well @tahitibub. The take-away from this is that even though running Calibre is the only time software triggers the panic or crash, it isn't considered something Calibre is able to do. My manifestations of this a couple of years ago were centered around a USB 3 PCI-Express card and the open source XHCI kernel extension that talked to it. It was wicked frustrating and never resolved until I switched hardware. (Bought a different USB 3 HBA that could use Apple's extension and driver.)
I bet if you bought Apple's USB ethernet adapter like the one they used to ship with the MacBook Air core 2 it would be fine! |
