Hugo, Campbell and Alfie Awards
I couldn't find another thread about last night's Hugos, Campbell, and Alfies yet - please merge if I post simultaneously with someone else. There are some really deserving winners here, in my opinion - I was particularly glad that NK Jemisin's The Fifth Season won, as I found it absolutely fantastic. I'm reading sequel The Obelisk Gate right now. Okorafor's Binti was great too.
My pick of the Alfies is Letters to Tiptree - terrific book. And the winners are: HUGO AWARDS Best Novel: The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin (Orbit) Best Novella : Binti by Nnedi Okorafor (Tor.com) Best Novelette : “Folding Beijing” by Hao Jingfang, trans. Ken Liu (Uncanny Magazine, Jan-Feb 2015) Best Short Story : “Cat Pictures Please” by Naomi Kritzer (Clarkesworld, January 2015) [B]Best Related Work : No Award Best Graphic Story : The Sandman: Overture written by Neil Gaiman, art by J.H. Williams III (Vertigo) Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form: The Martian screenplay by Drew Goddard, directed by Ridley Scott Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form : Jessica Jones: “AKA Smile” written by Scott Reynolds, Melissa Rosenberg, and Jamie King, directed by Michael Rymer Best Editor, Short Form: Ellen Datlow Best Editor, Long Form : Sheila E. Gilbert Best Professional Artist : Abigail Larson Best Semiprozine: Uncanny Magazine edited by Lynne M. Thomas & Michael Damian Thomas, Michi Trota, and Erika Ensign & Steven Schapansky Best Fanzine : File 770 edited by Mike Glyer Best Fancast :No Award Best Fan Writer : Mike Glyer Best Fan Artist : Steve Stiles ----- The John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer (2,406 final ballots, 1922 nominating ballots) Andy Weir ----- ALFIES : Presented by George RR Martin at his "Hugo Losers" party. Most of the Alfies are awards for the most-nominated work that Martin considers was pushed off the ballot by Puppies slate-voting*. A couple (integrity and excellence, this year) are purely Martin's choice. (Copied from twitter - if there's a better webpage around detailing the winners, please link.) Best Fan Writer: Alexandra Erin Best Fancast: Tea And Jeopardy Best Graphic Story: John Picacio presents award to Bitch Planet Integrity: Black Gate Best Fanzine : Journey Planet Best Professional Artist : Julie Dillon Excellence : Locus Magazine Best related work : Letters to Tiptree, edited by Alisa Krasnostein and Alexandra Pierce. Best Short Story presented by Robert Silverberg to Hungry Daughters of Starving Mothers by Alyssa Wong * Any further Puppy discussion is probably best directed to the Politics & Religion subforum. That said, which entries were gamed so we can know that if any of them won, they don't count/matter? The problem is that when the awards become gamed even a little bit, it makes all the results rather worthless and the winners aren't really winners. |

The problem is that any votes that were given to VD's choices takes away from real choices and spoils the awards. Sorry, but as long as VD continues to try to game the system, the system will be broken.

Jon, I agree with you that the subject is not one for P&R, but since the OP has expressed her desire to not discuss the topic here, why not start your own thread on the subject?

The OP has every right to want to focus on the deserving nominations/winners in this thread. If you wish to discuss the politics and the gaming of the Hugo's via the various "slates", then feel free to start your own thread to do so.
Threads naturally wander, but an OP has the right to ask for a particular focus. Let's try to oblige. Or ..... What Tom said. ![]() |

One might as well start it there, I suppose. Personally, I would suggest ignoring the debate. We no longer live in an SF world where Hugos are particularly important to the majority of readers or even authors. In fact, most traditional SF awards are now inherently suspect when it comes to their purported subject. The field is too big and too prolific to meaningfully annoint anything the best. |

I need to read Okorafor's Binti. A lot of people really seemed to love it. I've always been a fan of her shorter work, but her novels have been pretty hit or miss with me. I read Lagoon this year and found it ... OK.

He just did it so flagrantly and "in your face" that it made the flaws impossible to defend or ignore. I suspect that the opportunity to mock those who suddenly became offended with his choices was part of his motivation for embarking on the endeavor to begin with. He seems to thrive on confrontation. |
