How do I connect to another Bookshop?
Hello
Sometimes the Koboshop does not have what I want/need. How do I proceed to reach another Company? I tried with entering the URL in the place to Enter infos in the Kobo-Bookshop, but to no avail. I can not download these books on my computer, as I work with Linux (Kubuntu) and therefore have no Adobe DRM. [Unless sombody can direct me to somewhere where someone has a solution] and are therefore obliged to buy my books via the Reader. Thanks for any good tips. |

Thanks for this. Really? I never used Wine. Do you know of a good link? I might try it.

Hopefully this option works for you, because there is no option for DRM protected books outside of ADE if you don't want to buy from the Kobo store. You can't change the use the store interface on the device to shop at a different store.

Thanks for this information.
Do you know of any E-Book reader who accepts MY choice of store? |

Not really. They'll mostly all allow you to sideload DRM books via ADE, but no dedicated e-readers with ADE built in (Sony used to, but I'm not sure if that was just for library books). Android tablets or if you put android onto an e-ink reader might get you there.
And just to be clear, you can get your epub books from pretty much anywhere, but as you've discovered, for DRM books you need to use ADE on a computer to put them onto your Kobo. For non-DRM books you should be able to download directly to a Kobo (or others) via the web browser for the most part (some don't work depending how the link is set up since the browser is somewhat limited). That is incredibly misleading John. Yes there is an argument that a user might not want to go beyond that version of ADE due to a possible future challenge with a hardened DRM if the user wants to de-DRM their epubs. But if you're going to claim 2.0.1 is "the version needed" at least point out why you think so. For someone who has no idea about this (or may not care) you've probably just increased their difficulty in getting up and running significantly. At least give them the information to make an educated decision.

Because earlier versions of ADE don't always work to download eBooks because a newer version is required and newer versions of ADE might give you eBooks with a DRM that cannot be removed. 2.0.1 works to download and the DRM can be removed.

You don't need ADE 2.0.1, ADE 1.7.2 works fine in Linux
You don't need ADE 2.0.1, I have been using ADE 1.7.2 in Linux for four years and have downloaded hundreds of epubs from a variety of retailers and from my public library.
The only issue I have come across is with Google Play, their site is faulty and results in Error #2038 when downloading with ADE 1.7.2. (Edit: I posted a workaround for Google Play here, and although it works in the sense that it allows you to download the book and read it in ADE, there is a problem when it comes to removing DRM, so I thought it best to delete it. If you want to buy books from Google Play and be able to remove DRM then you will probably need ADE 2.0.1, but everywhere else 1.7.2 works fine.) Last edited by GeoffR; 08-20-2016 at 07:32 AM. Google play does need ADE 2.0.1 and I would not be surprised if eventually even more places need 2.0.1. So it's best to get 2.0.1 working and if that means Windows, so be it.

Excuse me, but has the discussion here not gone a bit astray? What has Goggle Play to do with my question? Just let me know, if it is relevant to find sources outwith the shops of the E-Book-Reader producer?

To read DRM ebooks from other ebook shops (such as Google Play) on your Kobo you need to use ADE to download the book to a computer before transfering it to the Kobo device. Edit: If you mean are there other ebook retailers with devices that can access DRM ebooks from shops other than their own, then I don't know, but the Kobo forum is probably not the best place to ask about non-Kobo devices. This isn't an answer to the Linux question, but on my PC with windows, I've been unable for years to work with ADE, even downgrading to 2.0. I gave up getting ANY answer from ADE.
So any book I buy from anywhere, I use the Sony Reader for PC to open .acsm files, and it works fine, if slow. Would there be something similar somewhere for Linux? |
