Changing Format in Date Columns

This should be a very simple thing, but I can't figure it out.

The two default Date columns in Calibre (leaving aside Date Modified) are:

1. Timestamp for adding the file to the program.
2. Publication time metadata for the work.

Being default columns, I cannot modify them, but I want there to be a difference in date formats between them. I tried to create a custom #timestamp column specifying the format M/d/yy (e.g. 12/31/1999). However, upon restarting Calibre the column begins in last place, showing no data. No data will ever come up in display.

How can I achieve my goals here?

There are Date format (MM DD YYYY) settings in Preferences: Tweaks

Alignment settings are a right click on the column title

@Molit - the Published/pubdate and Date/timestampcolumns can be modified by the user.

Some folks put the date a book was first published into the Published/pubdate.

Some folks repurpose Date/timestamp to something else. I use it to indicate when I last did something specific to a book, a custom column (Last Action/#lastaction) indicates what I did.
