A few days ago, I decided to turn on my kindle to have a nice read but, unfortunately, since I had not used it for weeks/months since I jailbroke it on v5.7.3 firmware, I could not turn it on (it had that screen where it tells you to plug it and and charge it)--so I charged it, for a while (not long enough apparently, as I noticed that it was on a screen that read "ICE-WARIO-512 - System Diags....." with a bunch of options underneath it).
None of the options were functional initially, so I assumed that I had not charged it enough and let it charge overnight. But even after charging it (more than) fully, my Kindle Voyage was/is still stuck on the screen "ICE-WARIO-512 -System Diags". This time, however, the options were functional--if I pressed an option, it did work. Logically, I pressed "(o) - Reboot or Disable Diags" and then "(EXIT DISABLE)-Disable Diagnostics" which I assumed would lead me out of this screen and boot my kindle device--but instead, it brought me to a screen showing "device_info.xml not found (Run Device Setting.)" So I went back and pressed the option "(DS INFO) - Device Setting" and tried again with no luck. So I pressed the "(o) - Reboot or Disable Diags" again and this time tried "(EXIT REBOOT) - Reboot System", but this option merely lead me to a screen that said "Diags exit Please use serial port" and showed the kindle boot logo (but no loading bar underneath it strangely) which flashed and returned to original "ICE-WARIO-512 - System Diags" screen. I also tried the option "(EXIT LOGIN)-Exit to Login Prompt" which lead me to the same results as the reboot option. I also tried holding the power button on the back of my device for a minute, but still I ended up at the System Diags screen. I did all of the above with my device unplugged completely, plugged into the wall, and plugged into my laptop--no difference at all between whether or not it was plugged in. Finally, I decided to try out the options "(USB EXPORT)-USB device mode" (under the main screen of System Diags) and "(USB DOWNLOAD)-USB Bundle Install" (under the menu for "(o)"-Reboot or Disable Diags), which turned out both to be the same thing--for both allowed me to access the filesystem of the device on the laptop. I noticed that instead of the "("Drive Letter:") Kindle" device I had normally seen on my Windows 10 laptop, I got instead a "("Drive Letter:") USB Drive" popup. Nonetheless I don't have a clue what to do from here. I don't know if my device is bricked, or if it's because I had installed Coward's Rescue Pack/Rescue Pack from NiJule's Snapshots, or because I hadn't used my device for so long and an update did something weird, or whatever. If anyone can help me out, I would greatly appreciate it, as I really want to use my device and don't think I could buy another jailbroken Kindle Voyage (as I'm aware that only firmware v5.7.3 is jailbreakable). Thanks. Last edited by htrej; 07-02-2016 at 07:14 PM. |

Plug it back in.
Leave it on the charger for a minimum of 72 hours. Then unplug it and hold the power button for 40 seconds. If that fails, come back. See you on July 6. |

That information is 'old news' and no longer applies. See my post in SKK's thread - SKK learned how to downgrade the 6th and 7th generation devices to a firmware version that can be jailbroken. |

@htrej: That would be on a KV, right?
When exporting the USB drive, do you see an "ENABLE_DIAGS" file at the root? (Given your story, you shouldn't, but one never knows...)? With the CRP installed, you would *have* to do the "exit diags" step *unplugged* to prevent it from rebooting into diags. You appear to have tried that, but I'd advise to double-check? (The "please use serial port" thingy is normal, and usually *can* be disregarded, but I don't recall if anyone with a recent-ish KV confirmed that fact. Someone must have, because I remember specifically enabling KV/PW3 support very very late for that exact reason). |

@NilLuJe: Yeah it's a KV, and nope I don't see an ENABLE_DIAGS file at the root, although today when I exported the USB I'm actually seeing it as "Kindle" rather than "USB Drive" which I mentioned earlier. And yeah, I heard about the unplugging before exiting thing so I made sure to try that a few times, but it appears that it just loops back to the system diags no matter what I try.
Another thing I noticed is that the LED that indicates that the device is charging isn't lighting up (yellow or green) at all. I've tried a bunch of different microusb's and none of them get the LED to light up for more than a moment...it's strange though because I know the microusb works as I can access the filesystem with the cable. @knc1: What thread are you speaking of? Are you talking about the "Kindle Paperwhite Downgrade" thread? A problem though might be that I don't exactly know how to downgrade firmware or anything from the System Diags screen. I'm seeing these options on the main menu: <DS INFO>-Device Setting <TOUCH PLATE>- Touch Plate Test <OTS>-Operator Test Suite <WAN 511>-511 <PROX CALIB>-Proximity Sensor <o>-Misc individual diagnostics <WIFI NART>-nART factory test <USB EXPORT>-USB Device Mode <WAN FW UPDATE>-WAN Elmo FW Update <o>-Reboot or Disable Diags <POWER SUSPEND>-Lock Screen @cinisajoy: I'll try that last probably; does it have to be 3 days without any disturbance? Since you can export the USB storage now, try this:
At the top level of visible USB storage, enter the filename: DO_FACTORY_RESTORE All caps, no extension (be sure of that), no contents. Eject or Safely remove (whatever your OS calls it) Remove USB cable Reboot by holding power switch for 40 seconds or more (ignore any pop-up panels that might appear) Wait Ref: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...78&postcount=1 = = = = There are now two (2) methods to downgrade 6th and 7th generation devices. You don't dare sign off today, you'll get left behind. Last edited by knc1; 07-03-2016 at 09:23 PM. |

geekmaster: ``The "Device Setting" used to be the first test on the main menu. Find it and run it to create the missing file (like it says). That file is needed to disable diags. EDIT: Alternatively, you can export USB from the diags menu, and create the missing "diagnostic_logs/device_info.xml" file on the shared USB drive from the host PC.´´ |

@knc1: I tried all of that, made sure to create the file without extension (I made a txt file and took off the .txt) and made sure to unplug it.....it's still looping back to System Diags after the Kindle logo screen.
I even went back to check if I had mistyped or something, but the file was still there and typed correctly. And yeah, I'll definitely try not to sign off. Thanks. @Yourcat: yeah, I did the Device Setting before and it lets me ''exit'' the diagnostics screen only to lead me to the another screen "DIAGS EXIT Please use serial port" EDIT: Never mind I take that back, @Yourcat, it appears that if I try to "<EXIT DISABLE>-Disable Diagnostics" choice specifically (under the "<o>-Reboot or Disable Diags" option on the main System Diags menu") I get the "device_info.xml not found <Run Device Setting.>" screen, which doesn't get fixed even after running Device Setting multiple times. If I choose "<EXIT LOGIN>-Exit to login prompt" on the same screen (Reboot or Disable Diags) I get stuck completely at "DIAGS EXIT Please use serial port." If I use "<EXIT REBOOT>-Reboot System" on the same screen (Reboot or Disable Diags) I get stuck momentarily on the "DIAGS EXIT Please use serial port screen"--then the screen flashes and loops once through the kindle logo and back to the System Diags screen. Weird. So I decided to go and take a look under the diagnostic_logs folder in the filesystem, and there sure isn't a device_info.xml file anywhere. I see a whole bunch (41 to be exact) files named "InvalidTestName_1.16.611.249627_B0540907450300MG@ ..." (the ellipsis represents the numbers 1-41, since there are 41 of these gz files). I'll upload the last one as I'm pretty sure its a log of something. Last edited by htrej; 07-04-2016 at 03:18 PM. |

Sounds like you have to use the serial port.
I've seen diags firmware with that requirement before. |

Darn, sounds like I'm going to have to buy a new kindle. If I were to buy a Oasis now, would it be jailbreakable, or is only Kindle Voyage and below jailbreakable at this point?
EDIT: So I made the device_info.xml file, a blank xml file in the diagnostic_logs folder, and now I made it out of the System Diags, and out of the DIAGS EXIT Please use serial port screen. I'm just plainly stuck at a screen with the kindle logo (with the kid next to the tree reading a book underneath) EDIT: WOOO!!! I held the power button for a minute on that screen I just mentioned, and am now seeing a selection menu for language (meaning that the factory restore probably has taken its effect). A loading bar is now appearing on the kindle logo screen! Thanks knc1 and Yourcat for your suggestions. I believe the kindle should be working now. P.S. @knc1 if you could answer that question I had about Oasis though (whether or not it is jailbreakable), I would appreciate it. [Also unrelated, why are you not interested in KV or newer?] Thanks again!! Darn, I notice that the root filesystem is nearly empty other than the documents folder. So I've lost my jailbreak right? If you can get an OLD STOCK Oasis (i.e. with slightly older firmware) it should be jailbreakable (and you could supply us with the image we need to support it). It is suspected that the latest Oasis firmware MIGHT not contain such an image we could recover. However, if we can get such an image from somebody else, then YOUR Oasis should be jailbreakable too. But not until we have that firmware image.

@htrej: Oh, great, the "create the xml file manually" thingy was going to be my next question, glad to see it worked
![]() Guess I'll add that to the RP package somehow, like we did for the K4 JB... |

Over a half century of working with this computer science stuff tends to age a person, sorry about that. Seriously - It should be possible to jailbreak the Oasis, once we get someone with a brand new, never powered on, version to help us. As suggested above, it may be better if you can find a retailer that still has a device from the first factory shipment of the model. (Ask if they have had that model in-stock since model day #1). *) Age. General lack of interest in anything Kindle. *) yup, but it should also be empty of whatever was causing your problem. *) It is possible that your jailbreak survived, it isn't something you can see in the visible portion of USB storage. It will not hurt if you want to re-apply the jailbreak for your device. |

My KV's firmware version is 5.7.4, but before I go and try to jailbreak it again, how do I actually check if it is or isn't already jailbroken at the moment?
