I had mine in my backpack and as I got into the Osprey I wavered a little and leaned back into something big and heavy.

Sat down, opened my bag and I had leaned directly onto the screen....

Coat pocket, getting in the car, steering wheel, torqued it.

Only make that mistake once.

BTW, thanks laugh! "How the deuce.. "

Don't hear that much except on Family Guy.

It's a fairly common British expression. The word "deuce" was originally a polite euphemism for the word "devil", which used to be thought of as being a very strong oath.

AKA a "minced oath" - love that phrase - e.g. gad zooks, crimeny

The thin design of the Reader seems to make it especially sensitive to bring torqued or bent - seems like I've read at least as many, if not more, stories of breaking the screen that way as by direct impact (where the cover provides some protection).

If you carry the Reader around in something like a soft briefcase or backpack, it seems worthwhile to buy or make some kind of rigid case - I like the polycarbonate DVD box.

Regards,
Bob

Mine may be the best/worst story. It's due to being old and forgetful. One Sunday morning I decided to go have breakfast at Crystal. (For those not familiar it is a fast food chain in the South of the US. I believe it is called "White Castle" in other parts of the US.)

As I was going out, I decided to take the garbage out. I laid the Sony PRS-500 on the hood of my car as I passed, in order to take it with me so I could read while eating. Coming back to the car I totally forgot the reader.

Going down the street, when I hit about 25 MPH, the reader blew off the hood. I knew immediately what had happened and was sure I had ruined it. Imagine my surprise when it worked fine with no broken screen. The upper left back corner was ripped open and I had to smooth some jagged edges so as to not cut myself but the reader is still working and now belongs to my daughter.

I prefer my Cybook even though I seriously doubt it's plastic case would have survived a similar accident.

I remind myself every day - "Must not put reader on hood of car!"

I really think Sony should buy it back from me (at the full retail price) to display it in their advertisements and a reader museum to demonstrate the durability of their readers.

I did this once with a hard drive many years ago. Now, I always open the car door and put the item on the drivers seat where I can't miss it.

BOb

PS: Luckily the hard drive was a failed one I was bringing to get replaced.
