I see there is a 5.8.1 discussion going on in the main Kindle forum.

Ah, now we have a chance to see if the update.bin.tmp.partial folder name blocks updates with the 5.7.4.1 firmware.

Reports please from anyone testing that.

You make it sound like catching a cold, or an infection. We know at some point they will probably decide to remove our "bridge" code during updates. They could even lock down serial. It is just a question of "when". That FCC ruling requiring lockdown of the radios inside devices is having unintended harmful consequences all over the industry, because the easiest way to comply is to just lock down the entire device, which is the battle we fight now DESPITE promoting NOT messing with radio settings and NOT tethering 3G (i.e. we are playing nice). Amazon is being lazy by locking us out this way, rather than just locking the radio hardware stay within FCC guidelines (especially in new hardware like the Oasis).

But you (or I think it was you) also said the bridge code was "virus like" in the past, as I recall, which made me raise an eyebrow because of potential negative connotations with that choice of words, despite is veracity.

As a technical analogy, to give a mental picture of how it survives.

Never in a negative sense, such as the way I use the same word in writing about OTA updates.
I intentionally mean the negative connotation in relation to OTA updates.

If they break the viral jailbreak with a future update, our next option is a rootkit to hide from the update (as I mentioned elsewhere). My worry is when we need to resort to JTAG as our only option. Time to breakout my OpenOCD hardware and re-familiarize myself with the latest updates, before that time comes, I think. Especially now that we know the JTAG pins are near the serial port on the PW2/3...
