10 Major U.S. Retailers Closing 100 or More Stores.

That's 100 or more each, not in total.

That information is from a post by consumer advocate Clark Howard.

None of the stores listed are book sellers, per se (unless you count Walmart). And, there are a variety of reasons that all of these companies are closing all of those stores. But, IMHO, all of these closures are just another portent of the continued decline in the number of the brick-and-mortar bookstores, if not their final demise .

Wal-Mart isn't first and foremost a bookstore. I have a feeling there are a lot of things involved in the closings. I hope the one here won't be one of the 154 though. There are few dept. stores here. A wal-mart, a walgreens and a shop ko. I don't know about walgreens prices but shopko is sometimes expensive.

What I figure is they probably on Walmart/Walgreens, they won't close stores where there is only 1. I figure they will close the stores that do the least amount of business in one area.

Now my question is are they closing the stores because of lack of performance or they cannot get enough employees to run the store at any kind of level?

Remember last year, when Walmart temporarily closed 5 stores.
I am not sure about the other 4 stores but in one store, no one lost their job. They were offered temporary transfers to 3 other stores.
That was the only time our Walmart had an almost full crew.

So I wonder if that could be it.

It has to do with consumer behavior. Quite a few consumers expect Black Friday sales all week, and millenials have changed priorities. Standard clothes fashion not in their favor, but tech is. Brand names are no longer important. You just buy the best for the price and if XYZ has more favorable consumer rating than the more popular ABC, you buy XYZ.

The Hancock Fabric & K-Mart stores in the nearest small city to where I live both closed over the past few months. That was bad, but when the Hasting's (Books, Video Games, Movies, etc.) and the used book store closed, it was devastating. Now there's only a Books-a-Million store, which was a store I didn't like & never patronized. Now, I go there every time I go to town, because it's the only book store remaining & I don't want to see it close. The coffee's not bad there & I look for things to like about the place. I hope it doesn't close any time soon!

It's very sad when the stores we like close. It's been happening a lot around here lately. If the one book store left in the nearby town closes, I will have to drive 2 hours round trip to get to one. I would be forced to start mostly buying books online from Barnes & Noble.
