Send via email from web UI?

Is it possible to trigger the send via email function from the web interface?
Thank you!

By WEb UI, you mean 'the content server'?

No. Not direct....

But why not download the file (to the system) and mail it as an attachment from the system you are on?

Generally people use the web UI to download books onto their device, not to send books to a second device.

But the content server is currently being rewritten from scratch for the upcoming calibre v3, and is expected to gain full read/write capabilities. So the web UI should be fully feature-comparable to the desktop GUI.

I can give you an example where it doesn't work that well to download to the device through the content server. Kindle.

Sure you *can*, but the experience of having a book loaded through the browser on a Kindle is garbage. So now say you are not local to your Calibre anymore but you want to put something else on a Kindle. Now what do you do? If you could just trigger the email function through the web server, you'd be fine.

I suppose I could (see Kindle above). It's just an annoying set of extra steps to have to do is all.

Oh? In what way does it fall short?

Well, the last time I tried it, which admittedly was maybe 6 or 8 months ago, it didn't really treat an ebook pulled from the content server as an ebook. It would open it and such, but didn't seem to remember where I was in anything, and re-opening later, I remember having issues figuring out where the file was.

I suppose I'll try it again and see how well it does or doesn't work, but all that is on a Kindle Fire which is still a tablet. I wonder how it would be with the e-Ink based Kindles.

Really!? Cool. If I could add (applying appropriate plug-ins), convert and search the library from the web interface, I could just run Caliber on one of our servers and not have to worry about cross-platform issues!

As an E-Ink Kindle owner, I can confirm that is a Fire-specific problem.

I am guessing that when you download a file from the browser it saves it somewhere else than when calibre sends it via a direct USB connection. Your Content Server issues would probably be fixed simply by downloading the file to the right place.

Exactly. Even Chromebooks will be invited to the party.

I agree, that was my conclusion as well, but I don't think the Fire gives you choice in the matter when downloading through the browser. The Fire experience is heavily curated and very Apple-like.

I only have these tablets because they were cheap last holiday season, they are actually intended to be wall control panels for home automation projects. It's not really a major concern for me, I was just trying to figure out what it would take to use a Fire with it. I use a rooted Samsung tablet as my reader usually.

Thanks!

Wait, the Fires do not have any Files app allowing you to manipulate your files?
And non-stock browsers have a filter nabbing AZW3 files and redirecting them to the hidden storage?

...

Well, I don't own a Fire and I can only say what I expect and desire out of an optimal tablet experience. Who knows which specific restrictions Amazon has -- not me, anyway.

Sorry for reviving this thread

This was exactly the function I was seeking. Sad to see it isn't available yet.

I have a very specific reason for wanting this function. Whispernet.
If I email a book to my kindle, it syncs between my phone and kindle. Page location and download is automated.

If I download a book to my kindle, it does not sync. Ergo, I lose the ability to flip between devices.

The simple solution for time being seems to be to download to your mobile device/computer/etc and then email to your kindle. This isn't a horrible compromise as the the kindle cloud reader DOES NOT show personal documents.
