Mobi Format.

Hello,
I have been given a DVD with about a 100 books in 'Mobi Format'. Not being very a adventurous person, I am here to ask if I can download and read them in my Kobo Glo HD please.
Thank You,
Ron

Kobo does support Mobi, but it does so poorly. You would be best to convert to ePub.

I assume these are public domain books. You can either convert to epub, or search the titles here at Mobileread for nicely formatted epubs and download those.

I strongly recommend to use Calibre to manage your ebooks. And Calibre can convert the mobi to epub when sending ebooks to your device too.

Assuming they are public domain and not DRMed, I'd recommend using Calibre to convert them to epub and then copy the epubs to your Kobo. The .mobi support in Kobo's firmware does not seem to have updated for any changes made in the format since Mobipocket was purchased by Amazon back in 2005(?).

Another vote to convert to epub if you can. I recently was given an advance copy of a book by a publisher that just wouldn't convert to epub without weird things happening. I was able to put the mobi version on the Kobo through Calibre. Only thing that was affected was it couldn't read the page numbers -- the entire book was page 1. So it does work, just slightly clunky in odd ways.

Woweee,
Thank you for all the superb ideas given here. In the end I tried conversion to epub and it worked in a fashion, but the best idea was to load them in as mobi. and 84 of the 100 loaded perfectly. the other 16 just seemed to get 'lost' somehow hi hi. So all in all a good result.
Thanks again.

I'm curious what "worked in a fashion" means and that a 16% failure rate is OK.

For the conversion, did you do any experimenting with the settings? There are lots of options to fine-tune the conversion, but the defaults usually do a reasonable job.

As to the "lost" 16 books, they are still on the device. The device will attempt to process them each time you connect and disconnect it from a PC. It's likely that only one failed. Unfortunately, the failed book prevents the rest of the batch from being processed. And that means adding books will probably fail later until that book is removed.

Is the book you converted one of the missing books? If so, that might explain the bad conversion. Problems in the book that prevent it being processed by the device might cause problems with the conversion.
