Book vs Movie thread
I've been reading a lot books made into movies lately, so how about a thread about it.
![]() I'm going to do separate posts for new books/movies I read/see. And have one master post that lists them all (for me). Last edited by John F; 05-08-2016 at 06:56 AM. |

The Revenant by Michael Punke
Although the movie was beautifully filmed, I preferred the book. I appreciated the extra detail that the book provided. |

Without pointing to any one movie, I noticed that many movies made from Michael Crichton's books ran amazingly close to the books. He must write in a cinematic fashion. Most movies lose much more in translation to the big screen (Game of Thrones I'm looking at you, lol!).

The Martian - Andy Weir
The book is by far superior, more details, more plot, more humour. The film was good but so much was missing. Lord of the Rings Trilogy - J.R.R. Tolkien Films were great but the books again have more details and more plot to them that the films, even at 3 hours each, just cant come close to. Interview with the Vampire - Anne Rice If you like Anne Rice' series then the film is a very good adaption in many ways, the book still covers more but I was very pleased with the film adaption. Queen of the Damned - Anne Rice Avoid this film if you in any way like the book series. It was just bad. Chronicles of Narnia - C.S. Lewis Actually good adaptions of the books. The books are very short but have old fashioned language that might put off new readers so the films are a good modern alternative to keep the story alive, shame they never did Magicians Nephew though as that was always my favourite. Harry Potter Series - J.K. Rowling Good movies of some good books, enough said really. The Night Watch - Sergei Lukanyenko I actually saw the film before reading the book and was left a little confused but enjoyed it overall. The books however (up until the most recent which was a little meh) are far better and a great read. |

Can we keep this thread to a single movie/book per post?
I think that would be easier to read. |

The Magician (Lev Grossman)
The tv series just finished its first season and it's pretty good. The book is terrible, and should not be read. It has no plot or story. Instead, it is a collection of Chekov's rifles; things happen, but they don't affect what happened before or after and are not referenced again later in the book. |

Chronicles of Narnia - C.S. Lewis
The first two movie adaptations worked because they chucked a lot of the books. But even that didn't save Dawn Treader; the movie was tedious. |

I will be interested to see what the (about to be released in UK) film version of Our Kind Of Traitor will be like, since I thought the book was second rate Le Carre.

The Tailor of Panama with Pierce Brosnan was a very good film from a very good book by John Le Carré.

I, Robot. Great book, but the movie had very little to do with the book. Very disappointed in the movie for that reason although it was an ok movie.

When I watched it, I thought the movie was more of a prequel to the stories. The stories mention that robots are not allowed on earth. In the movie, they are allowed, but give a good reason for the banning.

I've always thought the Riverworld series by Philip Jose Farmer would make a great show, but there have been two movies made from it that weren't any good.
Maybe it would make a better TV series. |

Frank Herbert's Dune illustrates this exactly. David Lynch's film is a terrible adaptation of a superb book. Some years later there was an excellent TV mini series.
