Does the $50 Kindle Fire 7" have OTG?

Does the $50 Kindle Fire 7" have OTG? I haven't been able to find any recent information on this, and I've heard of functionality being removed by Amazon, so I'm wondering if it is still possible to attach a thumb drive to a Kindle Fire and access the drive's files.

Specifically, does the current 7" Fire running OS 5 support OTG natively without having to get any 3rd party drivers? If not, what does one have to do make OTG work? Assuming the tablet can act as host to a thumb drive, does the USB port have enough power for the flash drive to operate, or do you have to get a powered hub? I read somewhere with respect to some other tablets that some flash drives work while others don't. Does this depend on the capacity of the drive or does it depend on other factors? TIA for any replies. |

I have plugged in USB keyboards and thumb drives. My $50 Fire tablet recognized both without issue.

It's a USB standard for mobile devices which enables you to plug other hardware into the mobile device. |

you can connect things like thumb drives to the micro usb port (either via an adaptor or there are clever ones with dual usb/micro usb connectors, like this oneAnd to OP, yes OTG works fine on my cheap Fire 7" |

That is so cool! Didn't know they had those devices. Can't think of a reason that I would need one, but if I were able to say, watch movies on my Fire, it would be great! Or, taking along a 3 month supply of audiobooks!

Thanks for the replies that, yes, the $50 Fire can host a USB thumb drive.

I wonder what the difference is between how the Fire handles files on a thumb drive and how it handles files on the SD card. People post about some apps not seeing certain file types on the SD card with those files only being visible in a third party file manager, like ES File Explorer. They also complain about movies not being playable that are on the SD card without first copying them to the tablet's main storage in order to be played. Does anyone know if that behavior is the same with files on a thumb drive? |
