I do think that if the light of the PW1 bothers you, the light of the PW3 will as well.

I have the same issue with my PW1. I would get eye strain from reading on it. I'd say for me it's the lack of contrast as the light comes on the text becomes more and more lighter. My eyes just can't handle trying to make out the text.
I bought a Kobo HD Glo that allows me to change the font weight and that solved the eye strain for me. I used custom fonts with added weight on the PW1 before Amazon decided it was no longer allowed removing the ability in an update. My PW1 is pretty much collecting dust. Is a nightlight an option? So much better to read that way. (for me)

I agree that the backlight of the PW1 is a bit on the bright side in a pitch black room. If I wake up in the middle of the night and want to read for a while, I find it almost unbearably bright until my eyes acclimatise.
I hope the Oasis will be able to turn down the light lower. We'll find out next week! |

I guess it must vary between devices, but mine is pretty bright in a pitch black room, to dark-adapted eyes. It's OK when you first turn off the room light - but waking up in the middle of the night, it's too bright to me.

@HarryT: If the levels are the same on Voyage as they are on my PW3 then PW1's lowest is significantly brighter. Equivalent of something like 3-4 on PW3.
That said I still don't understand people who want to read in pitch black with Kindle as only light source and expect pleasant experience / no eye strain/fatigue. Expecially on PW1 with its problematic/cloudy/blotchy screen that requires turning up the intensity to be readable. |

I agree that it's not ideal reading conditions - but if you're not alone in bed, turning on a bedside light is not always an option.

Not $500 but A$500. Big difference.
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=500aud+in+usd ![]() When reading on a front-lit reader in the night I usually use a lamp and set the front-light to a low level - just a several percent, just to make the background a bit lighter. |

There are other rooms, if you're that passionate about reading that you wakeup in the middle of the night and you start to read

You can get the Oasis much sooner if you purchase through Best Buy or order the base model with black cover from Amazon. If you are concerned about price I would look into the Voyage which has better contrast than the Paperwhites.
I also recommend an eye exam. My corrected vision is fine but I have dry eye syndrome and use Restasis eye drops which has helped a lot. I have difficulty using tablets for reading long term but I have had no trouble reading on my Voyage day or night. |
