My next Kindle: Is it available yet?
I still have my old Kindle KB 3G sitting over on my Desktop Tower stand. The display is frozen with a diagonal slash across the screen showing the text my wife was reading before the display "broke." The other half is blank.
I found a DIY replacement of the screen would cost about $40 dollars but there were no guarantees so we got a $50 Fire for her that was on sale at the time of the screen failure. Still I have not given up., I see the Oasis is coming and I have again looked carefully at the specifications of it and all available Kindles that have been given ( http://www.the-ebook-reader.com/kindle-comparison.html) ; (http://www.gadgetscompared.com/kindle-comparison/) and I still don't see anything that would inspire me to again pay out that original $189 dollars. (I do note that you can buy a used replacement for my KB 3G starting at $29 but again no guarantees.) My main problem today is the contrast of the screen. Not the finest of the font, dithering of pixels, not the back, side or front lights. As I get older my right knee will ache on stairs and my eyes balks at low contrast print. I am losing weight to help the knee but the eye doc says that I may need an "underside cornea retread" -my words, for the contrast problem caused by Fuchs' corneal dystrophy. I want a display that compares to a piece of copy/printer/typewrite paper with a Black or dark Navy Blue Pilot G2 rolling ball Gel pen (.7 or 1.0 mm) writing the letters. Is there such an animal? Is it 3, 5 or 10 years away or am I just dreaming? Last edited by frahse; 04-14-2016 at 09:35 PM. |

Heigh thee (which "hi" do I want back there?? **) to a store that will show you samples. I think the basic touch, or at least the basic PaperWhite would be perfect for you. The PaperWhite has a light up screen, which adds a whole lot of contrast. I have eye issues too. I resisted getting a lit up screen for eons (I didn't need that!!) but now that I have a Voyage, I am sold on them! The lights will provide the contrast that you need, even if you think you don't need the lights themselves. But go look at one in a store, to see what I mean.
** current meds are messing with the spelling lobe of my brain. Yes, that's possible. Oh ... "Hie" ... that's the one I wanted. I think. Last edited by badgoodDeb; 04-14-2016 at 07:46 PM. |

I agree that the lighting in the Voyage helps a lot with contrast. You can adjust the contrast yourself if automatic does not suit you. Side by side though, I didn't see a lot of difference between the Paperwhite 3 and the Voyage. Check it out over at Best Buy. I hear good things about the Kobo as well, but nobody carried it locally, so couldn't try it to see if it made any difference for me (also severe vision problems).

Yes, I thought that a Paperwhite might do the trick, if the lighting was all that was needed. The Voyage is a better resolution screen, but the Paperwhite is still better than the older kindles. And the light may help a lot more than one thinks, with eyesight issues. It's worth looking at one. Maybe reading a short story while standing in the store, even!

Yes, I agree with DuckieTiger. Both CURRENT PW and Voyage have the same 300 ppi. It was really hard to tell a difference between the two side by side, but once the update was done after I received my Voyage, going back to the store, the Voyage was just a bit better than the Paperwhite. If money is an issue, you'll be perfectly happy with the PPW. I got the Voyage because of the recent trade-in option for 3 older devices. I like it, but I'm still getting used to it.
