When she had attained fourteen years she was sent as “general,” which means maid-of-all-work, to Mrs. Swainson, who kept a second-rate lodging-house in a back street in Bristol. Linda was undersized for her age, and rather childish, and Mrs. Swainson pronounced her a simpleton.
