Hello.
Is there a way we can try to downgrade the kindle FW for PW2 IL version model 4GB from current 5.6.5 to a version 5.4.5.x or something like it. This is to take the benefit of Hypenation and/or page margin, font size hacks for kindle. I am not able to find any help on this thought. If there is any already a thread on it, please help me find it. Your inputs are appreciated indeed. Thank you. |

You will need to flash the rootfs via a serial port or the diags boot partition. It's been done before...

It is a bit difficult for me to understand it "rootfs". I may have to use an extra hand to understand it.
I wish it could be a bit simpler to work out like putting some file or sort of. If some commands are involved i dont mind, if i have proper guiding steps before me. I appreciate your help and I couldnot find where and how it was done earlier. Last edited by mitra; 02-27-2016 at 07:18 AM. |

"rootfs" == "root file system".
You will need to flash the appropriate partition images to the device, either from an SSH-enabled diags mode or via a serial port. A number of people have done it e.g. to get back to the original 5.4.0 firmware for the PW2 (original 2GB model). Reason being, that firmware was a lot more friendly to the Collections Manager kindlet. http://ixtab.tk/kindle-touch-images/PW2/README.txt |

Thanks for being patient with me.
The rootfs or partition images, does it mean the 5.4.5 .bin file, we usually get while updating firmware? Also flashing via diags mode means to put the file in the root directory and creating Enable_diags_mode blank file? and one last question do i have to jailbreak again if the 5.4.5 goes through successfully? Will this be worth considering i am looking for font size and margins and hypenation hack for PW2 out of all this. I was looking for something simple without bricking my kindle. |

So... keep in mind this is the type of thing that can easily go wrong if you don't know what you are doing.
(No kidding, you are overwriting the operating system.) The official update .bin file can be extracted using KindleTool, and contains a "rootfs.img" which can be used to overwrite the root partition (/dev/mmcblk0p1). You might want to flash the kernel while you are at it too. ![]() ... Once you've flashed a new firmware, it is no different from applying an official firmware update. Namely, you need to reapply all hacks, although the jailbreak itself should still be bridged (assuming you did the right thing and left /var/local alone). ... But of course this only matters in terms of your objectives. Font size -- have you seen the non-jailbreak "FONT_RAMP" file tweak? Hyphenation -- what hyphenation hack? Margins -- if you are referring to kaznelson's modified jars, sure. Although maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to update that hack instead. ![]() Last edited by eschwartz; 02-28-2016 at 02:39 AM. |

This discussion would be best continued in the dev forum.

@eschwartz : thanks for that information and warning. I can understand it now better though not completely specially the kernel and /var/....
What i can draw from all this is is wait for some easy hacks that may come up specially the @keznelson font size and margin hack. Hypenation hack is the one ixtab brought through JBPatch. I will try FONT_ Ramp hack for sure. Thank You for your simple guide. |

The JBPatch hacks only work on the PW1, not the PW2.
They were never reapplied for post-5.3.4 firmwares. Ixtab had given up on fighting Amazon's changing obfuscation at that point. |

Font ramp hack works for me. I copied the values from here and used notepad++ for it.
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...5&postcount=42 One nailed now on to margin hack jar. As with Hypenation, i think there is no light on it except the calibre plugin. Thank you very much for your inputs. Last edited by mitra; 02-29-2016 at 06:04 AM. |

So, the need for additional tools or hypenation hack from JBPatch. Glad to see your inputs. |

Calibre plugin is easy to use (only AZW3 format supports it, but no problem with that, if your books are not DRM protected)
