Remove data from 'publisher' list
A simple but obscure problem.
When I open any metadata page in my library and go to the 'publisher' box, I have acquired over the years a huge long list including duplicates, errors, phantoms and goodness knows what else. I want to edit this list, deleting all surplus. I have tried editing from the page itself but none of the delete/ctrl+delete/shift+delete/ctrl+ back etc. seem to work..........SO where can I find the list in my calibre program/application data files? I've looked in all the obvious places but if it's in any of those I've missed it! Can someone point me in the right direction please? Thanks (totally irrelevant I guess, but I can get to the search/replace file in Sigil to edit it with no problem at all!!). |

Um, I assume you mean the per-book Edit Metadata popup.
A single book can't have multiple publishers, but you can edit that box -- it is a regular text field... If you want to clean up junk publishers across your whole library, you can rename a publisher or delete it by right-clicking the name in the Tag Browser. Or selecting multiple books at once and using Bulk Edit Metadata. Metadata that no longer matches any book in your calibre library, is automatically cleaned. |

As eschwartz said. The list is self cleaning.
To correct variations there are 2 ways: 1) Open the Tag Browser to the Publisher. Right click: Rename. That will adjust the saved setting for all affected books. If the New Name exists, they will be merged into that entry. 2)Using the Tag Browser to Multi Select a group of Publisher with variations in their name: Select all Results: Bulk Metadata Edit and set the Publisher to what you want. (This assumes that Search is set to only show results) |

Thanks for those answers guys - but obviously I haven't made myself clear!
It's not the books themselves that are the problem, but the drop-down publisher (choice) list in the metadata box - it's so cluttered it's getting a pain to use, and is often quicker to type in from scratch if near the end of the alphabet! Does that make sense?? |

That choices list is dynamically created, from all the publishers of all your books.
How is calibre supposed to know which ones are real and which ones aren't, if YOU don't fix the incorrect ones? Again, you can rename publishers from the Tag Browser, this will let you merge the duplicates etc. Or just live with the incorrect publisher in one book corrupting the dropdown choices in another book. |

Thanks both - this post should close the thread.
I did exactly as you advised and after a quite satisfying time have a much cleaner publisher library. And more praise to Kovid - every time I ask something on here I find out Calibre is even more sophisticated than I previously thought. Honour and respect to Mr. Goyal. Thanks again - problem solved!! |
