Provenance of French and French-English dictionaries
What is the provenance/publisher of the built-in French, French-English and English-French dictionaries on the Kobo Glo HD? Unfortunately, none of the devices I've been able to test in stores had French dictionaries installed and the installation has been blocked and/or there was no internet connection.
Besides, is there any difference between the vanilla Glo HD and the FNAC branded model? I'm very sorry if this information is available somewhere in the forums or in the wiki, but I've really tried searching, with no avail, and the dictionary data files aren't very human readable... Thanks. |

There should be no difference between the vanilla and FNAC branded models, as they run exactly the same firmware.
The legal/copyright screen might give some more details about the source of the dictionaries. |

chrisridd, thanks for the information regarding the firmware and for the suggestion.
Please, can anyone with a Kobo check the publisher of the French and French-English dictionaries for me? For example through the legal/copyright screen as suggested? I don't have access to any Kobo device right now and the Kobo customer care haven't replied to my request at all. Thanks in advance! |

There are only very short notes:
1) (c) Editions Larousse Paris, 2008 2) Source: Merriam-Webster's Français - English Dictionary |

I don't really have dictionary problem english only but wish better dictionaries were available for purchase. Kobo is business selling books and e-readers they should sell best dictionary selections to anyone wanting special one for their Kobo in any language. Bad business not to make customers happy by not doing this. LibreOffice an open source program has dictionaries they could use but don't know if they are any better.

Access to French dictionaries has become more difficult with recent firmwares, which is why I went back to the 3.15.0 firmware version and stay there. The French dictionary is minimal, and I have added the public domain Littré, which is much richer, and especially useful for reading 18th and 19th century French. This means loading it as another language, Dutch for me since I already use Portuguese for the Princeton English dictionary, but if possible I advise against Dutch, as both it and French do not permit anything but calling a word from a book. Details in the Index of Custom Dictionaries in the developer's corner.
