When should I charge the battery?
Is there a recommendation on what level to charge the battery at? The battery on my Voyage lasts so much longer than my iPad that I often forget that the Voyage does have a battery that needs charging.
![]() Another battery related question - at what percentage charge does the first low battery warning come on? Will it be detrimental on the life of the battery if I wait until that warning comes on before I charge it? Thanks very much. |

Not sure about an ereader battery warning because I charge at either 25% or when I get the connect your device screen. I know my phone and tablets scream at 15%.
I also charge if I know I will be without easy power for a bit. |

....and it also depends upon how you use your ebook reader.
For example, if I know I'm going on a trip, then I charge it the night before so it's at full charge when I leave. Otherwise, 25% (as suggested above), seems like a pretty good marker. |

I think the warning comes on at 10% battery (but I usually don't let it get that far
![]() You have a bit of leeway -- it doesn't tell you once damage has already started, it tells you in advance of the critical point, so you can hurry and recharge it. ![]() |

Thank you very much everyone. It was very helpful, no idea what I will do yet though.
![]() On the subject of battery, is there an "hack" that will show the actual percentage on the battery? Thanks again, glad I found this forum. |

There´s no need to have any battery angst with the kindle :-)
Recharge cycles is not a concern with the kindle battery because you don´t do it that often. i.e. a phone might see a couple of charge cycles a day and be painful after 3 years, you´ll get the same effect on the kindle ... in 50 - 80 years. Now I think other limits pushes the max lifetime to about 40 years, and there´s probably some other components in the kindle which will fail even faster. Extreme heat will kill the battery, so I´d leave it in the shadow when not using it on the beach. |

Here's a page on battery university, a highly respected site that's built a good reputation for many years, about the care and feeding of lithium ion batteries.
http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/a...ased_batteries I haven't read the article in a couple of years but basically, as I recall, assuming it hasn't changed, it does say devices batteries will last longer if you charge them sooner. There are a number of tables and charges on the site showing that. However, the difference is small. You'll improve the overall lifetime of your battery by smaller shorter charges done more often but not by a lot. Personally I'll take all I can get so I charge all of my Kindles every Saturday and I charge the one I'm currently reading on when the gauge get's noticeably below full. I've been doing this for years, carefully, and my Kindle batteries are all good. However, all of my older Kindles are in the hands of my neighbors, many for several years, and none of them give the kind of care to them that I do. Quite a few let them go dead before they think of charging them. And all of their Kindle batteries are holding up just fine. So there probably isn't a lot of point in worrying about it unless it just makes you feel good, as it does me. ![]() Barry |

Thank you eschwartz, tovare, and barryem for the very helpful information. Obsessing over battery life is one of my favorite hobbies.
![]() And yes Barry, it does make me feel good to worry about it. ![]() |

Of course if you regularly use your Kindle in the bathtub you might find yourself obsessing less about battery longevity.
