feature request: aeneas and epub3 audio books
hi All,
long time since i posted here, and caliber is as great as ever. a year ago I was looking for some automated way to sync up audio book (mp3 or such) with an ebook text. I saw the epub3 specification etc. but i could not find a tool to automatically generate the SMIL file for a large existing audio book. I just searched again and found out that the aeneas package (phyton library that can generate the SMIL file automatically) is now free, open source and in github. http://www.readbeyond.it/aeneas/ I"m wondering if anyone tried to use it, and if it may be possible to integrate this into the calibre ebook editor. this will be an amazing feature and will solve the long standing discussion about how to store audio books in calibre ![]() any chance this feature can be put on the roadmap? |

I don't know about that -- calibre doesn't officially support EPUB3.
You can edit them, but any of the automatic features will operate in EPUB2 mode, which could lead to breakage. Given that, I can predict it will not become a core component anytime soon. Maybe someone can make a plugin... still, EPUB3... |

@eclipse123 - the major development track currently being undertaken for the Sigil Book Editor is support for ePUB3.
I suggest you make some enquiries in the Sigil forum. Most Sigil plugins are written in python, like calibre it ships with a built-in python package. Sigil is easily integrated with Calibre''s Library Manager via the latter's built-in Open With feature. BR Last edited by BetterRed; 01-20-2016 at 04:13 PM. |

thanks BetterRed, thats a good idea. I just saw a couple of plugins for Sigil that are targeting epub3 and SMIL specifically. I'll try to reply to one of these threads.
eschwartz, thanks for your comment as well. I know epub3 is not very well supported, but syncing the audio like what you have in Amazon is really a treat i'm looking forward to. I"ll try to experiment with this a bit as well in the coming weeks. |

Just a short update to close this - I actually find a sigil plugin that does almost exactly what I wanted - its called icarus (https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=268702)
I'll give it a shot :-) BetterRed - thanks again for your suggestion ![]() |
