Search Panel Default

Can someone confirm for me where the default for the search panel is located?

I always have it open, and yet sometimes -- about half the time it seems -- I open an epub and find it is closed. Other times, I'll open a series of epubs, and in one it opens as 'search all text files' and the next one, even though I know I haven't changed it, it opens as 'search current file'

I could understand if I did a current file search before closing one epub and opening another, but that is not the case 90% of the time. Sometimes when I know I did current file, the next one opens as all text.

There seems to be no rhyme or reason to what goes on with that. This has always occurred, even when for other reasons I've needed to replace the 'tweak_book_gui.json' file, so I'm guessing the default might be saved elsewhere?

Any suggestions or help?

The default for windows is the 'last used' state.

Just (select text) ctrl-F and it will open if closed

(saved state) confusion can happen if you have 2 instances of the editor open

Thanks so much for answering.

I thought 'last used' was the default, so it's slightly annoying when you close an epub, open the next one, and it's completely different. Unless the default is 'last used' for that particular epub instead of 'last used' in general? If it is last used for a particular epub, I'd personally like that changed...

I won't say I never have 2 instances open, but it is incredibly rare, so I don't think that is a cause for me.

last used is the default. And the steps you describe:

open book, opens search panel, close editor, open next book results in the search panel remaining open with the previously used settings for me.

Just a few minutes ago (I've been taking careful note, to try and find a pattern):

Epub 1 - I was editing something and had it at 'Regex-Function' and 'All Text Files'. Save and close epub with search panel left open.
Epub 2 - Search panel is closed, opens with 'Normal' and 'All Text Files'. Did a S&R without changing the settings. Save and close epub with search panel still open.
Epub 3 - Search panel open with 'Regex-Function' and 'Current File'.
Next 2 Epubs - Open exactly as previous epub closed.

There seems to be no constant behavior. For a while it seems to be as it last closed, but quite often, especially when working on a string of epubs in a row (mainly older ones that I'm just bringing up to my current preferences), it seems all over the place.

Well all I can tell you is that there are no calls to random() in the code to save and restore state, see https://github.com/kovidgoyal/calibr...search.py#L422

If you can find some set of circumstances that reliably reproduce the behavior, I will be happy to investigate further.

Where is your Calibre Config folder?

By any chance is that also connected to a Cloud (and not in a shadow only mode)

I think that the default status of the search window is last used, but FOR THAT BOOK.

If you save book1.epub with the search window open, then it will be open when you next open that book.
If you save book2.epub with the search window closed, then it will be closed when you next open that book.

At least that is the way mine seems to work.

Editor default saves are per session, not book
with 2 sessions and only 1 save location, things can get screwy

BTW the save happens on a NORMAL close. If you ABEND the editor...No save.

also, a Search that is never used (filled the box, but never searched for) does not get saved

Sorry, what is ABEND? I always save and then hit the X (I had to actually open an editor window to see, because I do it so automatically).

Would that mess up the defaults?

ABnormal END.

Program crash/SIGKILL

Means the program terminated in a way that did not allow it to perform any shutdown procedures. For example Task Manager ==> End Now
