Any PSP (that's PlayStation Portable) charger will work.

"DeadMike",

I bought a non Sony PSP charger at Yodabashi camera last week, I've left it in my office if you can wait till tomorrow I'll see if I can decipher the brand name and voltage details.

It is a wall mounted (flat pin) charger with a USB type cable from charger to the unit and it worked fine. As I said it was about 1500 JPY.

Any PSP charger will work fine with the Sony Reader. It has exactly the same power requirements as the PSP.

makes sure it's a PSP charger with the barrel type plug and not a USB type charger.

When I bought my charger, they were out of PSP chargers, so I bought a universal charger with a plug that fits. This charger does not have a 5.2V option. It has two voltage options that come close though. Both 4.5V and 6V work fine for me.

I have used it several months in a row with 6V, but recently changed to 4.5V since a little voice kept nagging me that I might be overdoing it in the long run. Most devices that run on batteries have some tolerance when it comes to voltages, since batteries do not keep the same voltage when they are discharged. This might not be true for charging electronics though, but undervolting should never be a problem (it either works or nothing happens).

My charger takes 100-230V AC and outputs 3-12V DC 1500mA

By the way: Chargers for most Nokia cellphones may work, too. They deliver 5.3 V at 500 mA, positive middle pin. So charging will be not as fast as with using a PSP charger, but as the cellphone charger is the one that you'll take with you on vacations anyway, this would eliminate the need of a second wall wart.
Only problem's the plug; does not fit the reader. But if you get hold of an adapter plug, this could be a neat universal solution.

You have just been lucky so far. The best thing to do is to toss this charger and get a true PSP charger. Just because the pug fits and it seems to work, doesn't mean it actually does. If you use an incorrect charger, you could be damaging the unit or causing a problem with the battery.

Seriously, every single department store, electronics store (Best Buy, Walmart, Target, etc.) and online sale site (eBay and a zillion importer sites) have cheap PSP chargers! The worldis not "out" of PSP chargers.

Seriously, buy a PSP charger. And undervoltage can do just as much damage as overvoltage, probably more. It's easy to clip input charging voltage in a device (and many do), but internal voltage boosting is not as common.
