Kindle K3 upgrade and How to change screen flash frequency in turning page
Hi All,
My Kindle model: Kindle k3g. Firmware version v3.3 Jailbreak v0.11.N I could not tolerate my Kindle K3g continuously restarting and run out of power in several days when WIFI is on. The cause is that Amazon will automatically push the update to my kindle I was expecting to upgrade the firmware version from 3.3 to 3.4 after upgrade JB, SS and USBNet to the latest version (B v0.13.N, SS v0.47.N, Python 0.14.N, Fonts v5.16.N, USBNet v0.57.N ), but the firmware upgrade failed. After that, the screen flashes every time when turning page which is really annoying.I did initial jailbreak on my kindle K3g 5 years ago, I remember there was a parameter that we can change on a jailbreaked Kindle K3 to prevent screen flash every time when turning a page, but I cannot recall this parameter and also failed to get it by googling. Appreciate someone can answer any of the questions ![]() ![]() What the parameter is? where the configuration file is located? If this is a debug parameter, how to apply the change? Does anyone successfully upgrade kindle k3g firmware from v3.3 -> 3.4 -> 3.42 without a factory reset without JB uninstalled? |

Your having done a "factory reset" is probably part of your troubles.

I did not do a factory reset. Before v3.3, the firmware can be upgraded smoothly. For upgrading from v3.3 to v3.4, it fails on both Jailbreak 0.11.N and 0.13.N. So I fall back to only solve the screen flash issue and stick the firmware on v3.3.

But some other change you did to the firmware might be. What is the failure code? What do the logs have to say? = = = = Actually, the advice above might be the better choice - Either manually or with Kubrick, go back to a known good image, work forward with the Amazon images, then make your desired changes. @knc1: Thanks for the prompt response. The firmware update error code is U008, I don't know where I can find the detailed error log. Checked /var/log, find no update related log in this directory. No error log in /mnt/us.

If it does, it is: Code:
~dm If working on a K3, that will produce *.txt files you can read. You might have to enable debug first: Code:
;debugOn With command line access, you could also try: Code:
dumpmessages https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...postcount=2545 Last edited by knc1; 12-20-2015 at 09:55 AM. |

@donB006:
Thank you very much for your effort. It really needs very good geek spirit to update kindle firmware like you. So far I don't have much time to follow your path. It is a great reference to me, probably will do it in future ![]() @Knc1 I followed your guides, turn on debug and then run dm via ssh client, the command just hangs there until I terminate it by force. Do not see any debug message. By continuously searching, I found a guy met similar update issue which is caused by Chinese pingyin input method. I guess it is the cause of my update issue too. I am now looking for the uninstaller update_pinyin_0.3_k3g_uninstall.bin. All the links point to this file are broken, the developer blog is also gone, has to resort to the kindle community again. Thanks all again. |

You could try to start over - use KUBRICK on it.
Keep in mind, it takes about 2 hours to transfer the image on a K3. |

IIRC, U008 is, err, an integrity check failure? Or something equally bad. That usually points to an issue during the transfer or, worse, HW failure.
EDIT: Managed to miss @knc1's link. Good news is, my memory still holds! ![]() |

Meaning the factory one is still there. All that needs to be done then is to remove the bind mount command from the start-up scripting. Good coding practice would have put that in a script file specific to the pinyin method. If so, then remove reference to the entire script. |
