Puzzling display question

Can someone help me understand a display issue please.

The final paragraph of an epub displays in the Calibre Reader exactly as I'd expect (see the image below).

If I look at the book in the Editor, the final lines of code in the chapter are

Quote:
<p class="calibre26">Masters nodded. ‘You may step down, Ms Carelli.’</p>

<p class="calibre26">Mary stood stiffly, seemingly unsure that it was over. She was still for a moment, as if preparing for the reporters outside, the cameras, the people who wished to cheer her, to revile her, or simply to collect her autograph. Then she walked across the courtroom, composed again, as she had been that day fifteen years before, leaving the Senate.</p>

<div class="mbppagebreak" id="calibre_pb_43"></div>

</div>

</body>

</html>
However when I read it in my Nook, the last paragraph is almost at the top of a page (it ends only 9 lines down, leaving 2/3rds of the screen blank - so nowhere near a page end) the final 9 words (starting "been that day") then appear as the only line on the next page, before the next chapter (a new file)on another new page.

I cannot see or think of anything that would cause this. All the other chapters in the book end with the same code, I am on page 450 of the book and can recall no other orphan lines.

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks

I don't have a Nook, but the Kobo devices have a similar bug: sometimes, the last line of a chapter is shown on a separate page. I have never found a pattern for when this happens. Seeing this happen on another device, makes me think it is a bug in the Adobe RMSDK. This is used by the Kobo devices for rendering epubs on and is probably used on the Nook as well. If this is the case, then it is the same bug on both devices and there is nothing you can do about it.

Actually, there is something you can do: report the bug to B&N and ask them to fix it. If enough people report it, maybe it will be fixed.

It is a Widows and Orphans bug. (the setting is usually in the CSS)
I have seen it as bad as, 3 lines, then 2 lines (the last)

I mainly see this rear up, if the coder tries and CODE those .

(I usually just comment those out and take what rolls... it usually is less)

/* widows: 2; */

Thanks for the feedback.

I can't see any reference to widows or orphans in the page_styles.css or stylesheet.css files.

But thanks again anyway

This is, I think, a bug in the Nook display software. I don't think there's any way you can code your book to avoid it.

Again thanks. All useful feedback. At least I know I haven't messed it up.

Remove the <div class="mbppagebreak" id="calibre_pb_43"></div> from your ebooks.

Their seems to be a bug in the adoble sdk that does not like blank/empty display blocks at the end of an xhtml file.

I have seen a <p></p> at the end of a file cause this problem in various reader apps based on the adoble sdk.

I have many books with that construct that view fine on RMSDK

I suspect the other </div>, that probably wraps the entire page (from just after <body ) has some odd attribute
