getting back your performance.
I have an iPad 2 32G Wi-Fi system that I got when they were new, many years ago. After many iOS upgrades and many app upgrades I was getting to the point that I would have to launch some apps multiple times to make them take and was removing apps to maintain a minimum amount of storage space of about 1G. The upgrades of apps wouldn't always take, I had to try multiple times. I was blaming it on the upgrades and as it turns out this was partially true but it can be fixed.
My son works for Apple and he suggested I needed to reset and restore my unit. I followed his advice and it is now back to practically new. Here is what I did (a process that will take many hours so block off some time). 1. I plugged my unit into my PC and kept it plugged in. 2. I backed up my entire system using iTunes on my Windows machine. 3. I did a full cold reset of the device like I was selling it or something. 4. After its reboot it offered a choice to restore my system which I accepted. 5. After a long wait my system came back alive. For some reason, even with the backup some apps still needed to be updated (about 2 dozen). I updated them which went much smoother than it had before the upgrade. 6. I gained about 7G of free memory! and now my apps start quickly, upgrades are quick and simple, and I am enjoying my new iPad (well not really new but you get the idea). 7. You may need reenable find my phone if you had it before. Evidently Apple garbage collection to manage memory is poor or non-existent. I hope this will help some of you. Dale |

I usually do a full reset and restore when theres an OS update, or at least annually, to get rid of the junk. I also don't restore from a backup, because half the time, it brings back some of the junk. I always setup as a "new" device and even though its a PITA to have to go through and enter all your details again, it does make a difference to performance. |

I've never backed up my iPad with iTunes (which I loathe, even though I can't really say why, having not used it for quite some time), but following a situation where I got locked out (would not recognize my pass code) I had to do a full restore, which was a real pain, I turned on backup to iCloud, which should avoid most of the pain should this happen again. I was surprised to find there was no way to reset the pass code remotely, as I've done with Android devices.
Touch ID is a little flakey, every week or so it says 'it has been longer than 48 hours' and makes me enter the pass code even when I have used Touch ID just a few hours earlier. |

Yes, a restore from Cloud backup is much, much faster than from iTunes.

Oddly enough, I wasn't able to complete the update to iOS 9.1 with iTunes, though. I ended up using iCloud for that, which took a few hrs. I think a full restore if that phone with iCloud would have been unworkable, though. |

I back up my IPhone and IPad to both the icloud and Itunes. I only use Itunes when I want to back up my devices. When I rip music I do it it with windows media center, and I have found out to do so I have to stop the apple mobile service in windows or Itune takes over the cd.

I never back up to icloud, with only 5GB available, I sure as heck do not want that clogged up with multiple iOS backups. What a pain. I back up to the computer, encrypted... just in case I do want to restore from a backup at any time, or if something goes horribly wrong. Must admit, that hasnt happened since my first iphone, and back then, I had no backup. LOL.

My backups are relatively small, because apps don't get backed up (they simply reinstall), and I have relatively few apps that have data that I want to backup. The main one for me is GoodReader, in which I have about 5GB of academic PDFs. Cloud is great for that, because it means that I can access the docs from all my iDevices. |

Thanks, Harry, I have WAY too much other storage, to want to buy more. With the dollar being as utterly pathetic as it is at the moment, its $1.50/m here. Still not massive, but really, I don't need the extra.

Thanks for the info. My ipad2 has become so problematic that i rarely used it and i always thought it was a great device.
Thats been my one beef with Apple is the inability to go backwards. If I knew then what I know now i wouldn't have gone past ios7 It did give me an excuse to pick up a used Macbook Pro which was less than a refurb iPad and white not as portable more functional. |

I have an ipad 1 which still works fine. I use it for reading, a few different games, and web surfing.

That's precisely the reason I always wait a few months before doing a major o/s upgrade, so I can find out from other people how it's performing on the older hardware.

iOS9.2 is a huge speed update for my iPad 2, so you may want to update to it. 9.1 was a crawl and made me seriously consider an upgrade to an iPad Air 2.
No more need for that fortunately! ![]() |
