The only thing you can do is a Factory Reset. To do this, enter a passcode of "111222777". Your Kindle will then restart. You'll need to re-register it and reload all your content.

Well, yes. They can delete everything on your Kindle.
You will then have to reload everything. What alternative do you suggest? That if you forget your password the Kindle is forever trashed? If someone malicious gets ahold of your Kindle, you are not likely to get it back. So they have a stolen device which will get blacklisted. If you forget the password, you can start anew. If a "friend" who is playing a joke on you wipes your Kindle, you start anew, and stop being his friend. This is the only situation where, practically speaking, the reset code is a bad thing. |

The purpose of the passcode is to protect confidential information that you have stored on the device, and the fact that the only method of bypassing the code wipes the device serves that goal. |

And in addition to Harry's comments, if you lose your Kindle or it is stolen, you should report it as lost to Amazon. That way they can "black list" it, so that it can't be registered to someone else's account.
