I have SO many questions! This is my first tablet ever and I have also gotten one for my mom and one for my father in law, different houses, different families.
FIL is big into casino games. What is the best casino game for the Fire? I don't mind buying the app, but I need one with no in app purchases required. He has no wi-fi at his house. Any suggestions for a good one?

For any Fire you lose a lot if you don't have daily Wi-Fi access.

But you don't say where he is or whether he has broadband that could be upgraded so no one can answer.

Oh, gosh, didn't know that was important. Like I said, totally new at the whole tablet game. No, there is no internet at all in the house, period. Doubt there ever will be, though we keep trying to talk them into it. They do go to the library or McDonalds or some such place that does have wi-fi about every day or two. Will that work?
Please be gentle with me, I have never had a tablet so I really really know NOTHING about how to work them or anything at all about them. I did figure out how to turn the Fire on, that's about it!!

One of the big things is that a lot of games, if they're going to be playing games, and some other apps require an active internet connection in order to to run. (this is an app thing in general, not just a Fire thing) I don't know if this is for sure the case for casino games in general as I've never played any. What all do you anticipate them using the devices for?

I'm hoping FIL will use it as a casual gaming tablet. Just silly games like Candy Crush or Bejeweled or something like that. I'm kind of at a loss in that department too, I don't play games. Any suggestions for any good (free or paid) games would be very appreciated!

My plan: I got a 128g memory stick, and I'm going to put all of my music on it. I've got a big stash of mp3s from years of music purchases.

I'll also load movies for the kids, and will use it as a pdf reader, since E-ink isn't super for that.

at 35$, it's going to be a great little media center.

If you have Wi-Fi, that's about all you need. though some people have trouble developing the right touch for using the touch screen. If that's a problem a stylus may help.

When I got my first (Fire 2) Fire I only had dial up and discovering that the Fire's help and user guide were unavailable unless you were connected was annoying and caused me to spend several long sessions in the library until I got things clear, but I got on well enough (mainly books and podcasts) between December 2012 when I got my Fire and July 2013 when I installed broadband with Wi-Fi.

I like AceyDuecey, and I also like FreeCell and other card games by Mobility Ware. I also like Bubble Pop by Coconut Studio.
All of these will play fine w/o wifi, after you download.

Sorry, I don't play any casino games. My MIL plays some of the Bingo games, but not sure which ones she likes best.

Thank You! I'll look into those today. I found a Farkle game that is OK, but only OK. I'll have to keep an eye out for a better one of those too.

You have to connect to internet to renew app licensing ever so often or it won't run. No internet means he won't be able to do anything but read what books you put on it. Some simple gaming but really no internet means the tablet will not do about 88% of what it was design to do. You will have to set up all local files for books, music and videos which takes space

If he takes it with him to McDonalds/Library 4 times a week will that be enough internet access for the apps?
Oh, and can I change the order up at the top of the screen of the words Books Music Audiobooks Games etc? I want them in a specific order, not sure if they can be re-ordered or not, or how.

No you can't change the top. Does he know how to use public Wi-Fi? A lot of times you have to open the browser and accept the TOS before you can use it. Some WI-Fi have downloads disable but he should be able to get books as they are smaller files.

Kindles (or at least the ones I've owned) will connect to AT&T hotspots (McDonalds, FedEx, and I think still Starbucks) without any TOC step. But not Fires. You would not really want them to, given security concerns with open wifi.
