How to keep Special Offers at bay?
Will try to keep this short and sweet.
Kindle 3 Keyboard running 3.4.2, came with Special Offers. Ads displayed correctly on Kindle. Removed Special Offers via Amazon. Status on Amazon.com shows Special Offers as "Unsubscribed". Ads disappear within minutes of removing from Amazon's site. Used it for the next several days, no issues. Ads (tried to) come back. Received error message stating I needed to enable wireless so it could download the latest special offers. Wireless had been on entire time and connected to local network. Changed name of kindle on Amazon's site to verify kindle was syncing...name changed as expected, confirming sync was working. Restarted Kindle. Still receive error regarding not being able to download Special Offers. Factory reset. This got rid of Special Offers (for now). Doing a factory reset this time was ok, as I had just finished setting it up for my wife (but didn't do the handover yet). Once she starts using it, she won't be too happy if it sporadically gets error messages and I have to keep wiping it. Any idea what happened? Anything I should do to keep it from happening again? If it comes back despite my best efforts, what additional info would help diagnose the issue? Thanks. |

This isn't normal. I had Special Offers removed shortly after purchasing my Kindle PW2 three years ago. They haven't come back or attempted to come back. Hopefully, the factory reset will do the trick and you won't see the error message again. If not, I'd suggest contacting Amazon to see if they have any tips or insight.

There are no firmware differences between a Kindle with or without special offers; the difference exists purely on Amazon's servers. You need, therefore, to contact Amazon to get things changed at their end.
