Google's Play Store must not be "blocked"

Apparently, using Android app's such as "Noroot Firewall" to block Google Play Store will interfere with the licensing of the paid version and you cannot connect to Calibre on your desktop PC. (Some expert will correct this posting if I'm not getting this right.)

That is, those of us who try to control which of our app's communicate over the Internet and when, must be sure to unblock Play Store before using Calibre Companion.

All apps that use Google's app licensing use Google Play Services to check the validity of the license.

In CC's case, the license is checked during the first connect as a wireless device after 30 minutes have passed since CC was started for the first time. The license is never checked again. The firewall must be open only for that one connection.

A similar situation arises if someone is using a locked-down firewall on his/her home network router, or uses a local network with no internet access at all such as a personal network in a hotel room. In this case CC's cannot connect with the license server. Users work around the problem by switching the device to use an open network such as a cellular network, then attempting to connect to calibre. The connection will fail because calibre isn't visible, but in the meantime the license check will have succeeded. CC connections on a locked-down network will now succeed.

BTW: the reason for the 30 minutes: when CC was first released 3 years ago we found that the Google license servers sometimes weren't updated immediately. The 30 minute delay prevented spurious license violations.
