Free (nook/Kindle/Kobo/iTunes UK) Damaged Goods [Yorkshire Lawyer Crime Thriller]
Damaged Goods by West Yorkshire-native author Helen Black, who herself has experience with child care law, is the 1st in her Lilly Valentine series of dark mystery/crime thrillers starring the eponymous lawyer (not the criminal, in case you were wondering) who champions and sleuths for apparently lost causes in the family law justice system in Yorkshire, this installment centred around the case of an underaged daughter accused of murdering her prostitute mother, free courtesy of publisher HarperCollins UK's Avon imprint.
NB: Apparently this series overall deals with very dark themes of child abuse, self-harm, underaged suicide and other disturbing matters, so caveat lector if you think such things might not be to your taste for entertainment reading. If you happen to be interested, there's a brief Q&A with the author on her website about this book in particular and why she chose to write about the issues which she did. Currently free @ B&N UK, Amazon UK, iTunes UK, and Kobo (probably just available to the UK, as this seemed rather unfree in the other regional stores I spot-checked, though YMMV). Probably also free at Google Play UK. And this has been the (late!) selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day. Because disturbing as it may be, it's also nice to have some variety in the subject matter of suspense/crime novels that we get, and if the use of it happens to bring greater RL awareness of certain social issues to readers who otherwise might not think of them as the author had hoped, then bonus. ![]() Enjoy! Description A daughter accused of murder. And unable to defend herself… A dark, gritty thriller, perfect for fans of Kimberley Chambers and Jessie Keane. When a prostitute is found butchered on a notorious Luton council estate, the finger is immediately pointed. The prime suspect? Her 14-year-old daughter, Kelsey. But Kelsey is unable to defend herself. After an attempt to take her own life, Kelsey has been left horrifically scarred and mute – unable to even utter the words ‘not guilty’. It’s down to Lilly Valentine – a tough-talking Yorkshire lawyer – to prove Kelsey’s innocence. Prostitution, paedophilia, drugs and blackmail: Lily must put her own life at risk to save a silent, terrified child and find the real killer… Last edited by ATDrake; 10-20-2015 at 02:19 PM. |
