Changing .original_epub back to .epub

I recently had an epub with some issues so I ran it through the Calibre converter into another epub and it kept both versions, giving the old one a .original_epub. It didn't fix the problem and I didn't need the re-converted copy so I deleted it (who knows if more stuff broke on the reconversion). Now I just have .original_epub and while it does open in Viewer how do I get it back to .epub so it works correctly with other applications/devices? I tried manually naming it back to .epub but then Calibre loses track of it because it's looking for .original_epub.

On a side note, I've read Calibre can't handle multiple versions of the same format, which is a feature I've wanted to have, but isn't that essentially what is happening here? It seems like I could reconvert an epub (or whatever format you have multiple versions of), then manually swap out the file with another version of the epub and Calibre would track both. Is this a valid workaround or am I missing something?

Right-click on it (in the MDE): Restore

Highlight the book you want to restore. The far right column of calibre is the Book Details column. Under the picture of the book cover you should see "Formats". In this case because you have deleted EPUB, there will be only one format showing: ORIGINAL_EPUB. Right-click on ORIGINAL_EPUB and from the drop down menu select: RESTORE the ORIGINAL_EPUB format. This will automatically convert the ORIGINAL_EPUB back into the EPUB.

EDIT:
This method and "theducks" method get to the same end-point. "theducks" is probably easier to follow.

Well, you now know how to restore an ORIGINAL_FMT.

As for why it is created -- calibre does not track multiple copies of the same format. However, the ORIGINAL_FMT facility is there for the one and only, sole purpose of helping you revert from a conversion gone wrong.
You can, of course, abuse that for other reasons.

But I will note that conversions always work from the ORIGINAL_FMT if one exists, and create a new FMT.
You are meant to delete the ORIGINAL_FMT once you verify the conversion worked.

You want to track revisions, invest in a Version Control System.
Yes, we have had people requesting version control ("track changes") in calibre.

Cool. I'm more interested in the multiple formats for things like PDFs or Txt files that have been optimized for certain devices rather than backup/version control. A book scanning service I use creates PDFs optimized for pc, ipad, and iphone but it appears I have to use a workaround like this one to get them into Calibre, for example, and I'll occasionally make some device specific formatting in a txt or epub. A second pdf or epub slot seems like it would be more useful than 95% of the obscure format slots calibre supports.

calibre doesn't have a "number of slots" certain formats are builtin -- which means they have input/output conversion plugins -- but you can add literally any filetype whatsoever, even made-up ones.

I don't know about optimizing for different devices -- seems mostly useful for PDF, which I don't use.
And it's a lousy format anyway ideally the books would be OCR'ed and proofread then turned into reflowable EPUBs.

You could create multiple book records, i.e. "Some book (%device% edition)"
