help diagnose my Kobo's problem

I have a year and a half old refurbished Glo.

Battery was drained, so I plugged it in overnight to charge.

Battery's now at 100%.

I went to sideload two books from Calibre tonight. When I disconnected, it started to go through the processing screen, with 6% then flashed to done. Then it loaded the main page, but the books didn't appear.

So I deleted via Calibre, tried again. Same result.

Now, whenever I try to start reading any book already on the device, it loads a blank screen. If I tap the screen, eventually it goes back to the main home screen and says the book is finished.

Is this a corrupted database?

I did a pinhole reset, and the books already on the device seem to be working again. I'm wondering if I need to find time to do a complete factory reset and if this problem's likely to keep lurking if I don't.

I did finally on the fourth try get those two books and one other sideloaded.

Could leaving the ereader for a couple weeks without a charge have screwed up the database somehow?

Curious if anyone knows what might be going on. This is the first problem I've had with this Glo. Thanks.

Unless you have thousands of books to reload, a factory reset is pretty quick and straightforward.

Sounds like it could be a corrupted data base. If your books are in the main memory copy and back up to your computer. At this point do a factory reset and that should fix things for you. Drawback is waiting for data base to be rebuilt. I always keep my books on a memory card but a lot of guys prefer he speed of the main memory of the reader.

Good luck

Regards

yes, everything's in the main memory. thanks, I'll try to reset ... I was just hoping to not have to since that means remembering what is on the reader, and where I am in each book. I tend to have quite a few on the reader at a time.

What I did last time I factory reset was in calibre, was tag all books that were on the device in my library with a tag (sort books by on device column), and used the Kobo Utilities to copy reading status and progress from the Kobo into the calibre library.

I then did a factory reset, and uploaded all my books again, let them process, then used Kobo Utilities to update the reading status.

Not perfect, but better than having to start from scratch.

I normally use the calibre Reading List plugin to record what books are on my device, then ensure that the Kobo Utilities plugin has stored my reading location in all books.

After the reset I send all books that are on the Reading List back to the Kobo, let it process all books, and then finally use the Kobo Utilities plugin to restore reading location.

Thanks sherman ... I'll have to look into that. This is the start of a two-week "hell week" of longer-than-normal work hours, so I won't be having the chance to read anything for a while. Maybe this is also the opportunity to clean up the Kobo and have fewer books on it so I know what's actually on it ...
