Fantasy Series rec
I'm looking for a series about a wizard who is not that great at magic (hedge wizard) and has to outwit enemies rather than outmagic them. Something like Rincewind from Discworld, but who can actually use magic. Not sure if there is any such series just thought it would be worth asking.

Codex Alera by Jim Butcher, starting with Furies of Calderon. Tavi has no magic when everyone else does and outwitting enemies by relying on magic around him rather than his own lack of ability is his only option.

I second Codex Alera.
I also liked Kelley Armstrong's 'Women of the Otherword' series books that star Paige Winterbourne (e.g. Dime Store Magic) as fairly close to your interest as well. She is a witch who generally has to outwit her more powerful opponents (aside from sleepy-time paintball guns, lol). |

If Urban Fantasy counts too I'd suggest the Alex Verus books by Benedict Jacka (Book 1 is Fated). Alex is a Diviner, able to see into the future (to some extent) but he can't throw around magic to fight his enemies.

Just finished reading Codex Alera last week, that's what put me on the hunt for more series like it. I'll check out the other two recs y'all had thanks!

For me, lots of fun as a humorous fantasy/magic. Then there is John Morressy's magician who specializes in "counter magic". Don't think that the magician was not that good in magic tho. |

It's a great series, you can still find the first book for free on the author's homepage, in ugly HTML but Calibre can handle it. There's a new series set in the same world but I have not read it yet.
If you're open to Indies I also enjoyed the "Powerless" series by Jason Letts, first book is free on Smashwords. One of the main characters in Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser is a hedge wizard; although he doesn't do much magic all in all and the series turns very strange halfway. Still a fun read... |

Threads of this nature pop up quite often on Mobileread.
You may wish to do a search and check some of these older, but still viable threads, in order to supplement this current thread. Have fun. ![]() ![]() Don (Moderator) |

Yeah I've been slowly going through all the threads to see some books/series that pop up fairly frequently. I've got a bit of a reading list for now from recs but always like to get some more

Steven Brust's Vlad Taltos is an indifferent sorcerer who often has to outsmart powerful wizards.

Vlad Taltos is amazing, and shame on whoever responsible there are no ebooks for the first half of the series. I'm not sure if "is not that great at magic" applies to him though. He does a lot of crazy stuff.

Because part of the series isn't available in eBook, I would stay away from this one.
