Arrow Is recent calibre versions need more power & works slower in old laptops?

I was using calibre 2.35 64 bit and recently updated to 2.39 and it seems slower to import new books/documents from folders on my desktop.

Has anyone experienced slowness situation in recent versions or it is just me and my laptop is getting slower?

Laptop? (in title)
Desktop? (in the body)
Is there a Networked folder in this picture? on (now poor) WiFi?

Security software (A/V) can change as frequently as hourly (the normal for free versions is a daily update)

Heat will cause a slow down (Throttling), trying to save you CPU from clogged fins or a failing fan

Dying HD will retry their reads or writes (usually, a Clone onto a new drive will still save the pain of a full re-build. do it NOW). Or the drive is just overcrowded and fragmented)

sorry for the confusion.
I have a laptop and keep the "books folder" at the desktop of my laptop to be added to calibre

No networked folder
yes I have the security software
Heat: I have a Core Temp program shows the temperature all the time after I have burnt my motherboard because of rendering process of an editing program. I don't use editing software anymore and watch the temperature to be under 50 c degree
Dying HD: could be the case
defrag: I do it from time to time

If it's just me experiencing slowness , then it would be safe to go back to 2.39 or 2.40 when it comes out (I have downgraded to 2.35 again today)

Thank you for the pointers I appreciate very much, theducks

One important way to make sure you get maximum performance is to have the Calibre install folder and the Calibre library folder(s) excluded from being checked by AV software.

I haven't noticed calibre slowing down. I agree it is probably some factor of your working environment (AV, hardware, etc.)

I also have no noticed Calibre slowing down. Though I have noticed some AV slowing the system down so maybe your AV updated itself and now it just runs slow.

@millan - I add 10-20 documents, and 5-10 video clips a day. I run two AV's with no exclusions, the libraries are on an Indexed/Compressed HDD drive. I haven't noticed any slowdown.

I add from folder on an SSD drive.

Calculated fields will do this when there are lots of books..

Instead of using a calculated field which require a recalc every start (or data change). Use the Search and Replace {template} feature to populate a custom Static field. Save your search for a later refresh/update of books

Only use the calculated field for more dynamic data (eg #read_progress)

Coloring rules will slow things down a tiny bit per book.

It all adds up.

Thank you for the feedback from you all: eschwartz, JSWolf, BetterRed, theducks

It seems I have the only one is having the problem.

So I have just optimized my laptop by moving all the unnecessary stuff from laptop to external usb drive, defragged and cleaned it up a bit.

And I guess it is safe to upgrade it to the latest one again very soon.

Thank you for your concerns

theducks: The only extra field i have is the one I mentioned here at:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=247575

all the best to you all

@millan - if you want to pursue this issue, you could try 'installing' the portable version. Don't install the portable version in Program Files or Program Files (X86), and leave everything else (windows, av etc) as is.

We're interested if the slowness exists with portable, if it doesn't then that would suggest the problem is not related to the library itself, and we can explore other possibilities.

The portable version will not 'interfere' with the installed version.

You will need to 'point' portable calibre at your library via Library->Switch create->Use the previously existing library as this location

This setting won't stick (persist) and you won't get all of your preference settings. But we're using portable as a behavioural diagnostic tool, not as a solution, so those limitations should be 'acceptable'.

But only if you want to and in your own good time

Thank you BetterRed.
I think the feedback I have is good enough not to pursue this issue further for the moment.
All the best
