Cover as screensaver on Boyue T62 and Onyx Afterglow 2

I have been using calibrecompanion on my phone for some time now and now after I upgraded to a new reader Boyue T62D I have started using it on my reader as well.
Previously I had a nook touch with an old version of Android where most apps didn't work so I only used Coolreader. And as the developer of Coolreader had nook touch he put in the ability to change the screensaver to the last opened book.
Now that I have started using calibrecompanion and have multiple apps for different formats. I can't see a way for the current book cover to be set as a screen saver unless it is done by the app that I use to open all my books I.E calibre companion.
Now comes my request will it be possible for calibre companion to set the screensaver when a book is opened with calibre companion. For my reader you need to make SdCard\ScreenSaver\Standby.png does not matter if the file is a jpeg just naming it to Standby.png works.
I know all readers might not use the same setting but as far as I know boyue Android readers do and they are most sold Android ereaders. You can maybe add different options for different readers if other readers require some other settings.

FWIW: the images are stored in /system/media on my Onyx Afterglow.
YEAH! I'm looking into changing the lock screen image in my phone, and I was thinking of copying all cover images and moving them around as I'm reading.

I have this working, sort-of. On my Energy Systems T62+, the screensaver changes on the second standby after changing the file. It is acting as if pushing the power button to exit standby is what causes the refresh of the screensaver. In other words:
  1. Assume I read book A and the screensaver shows the cover for book A.
  2. I read book B.
  3. I push the power button to enter standby, I see the cover for book A.
  4. I push the power button to come out of standby.
  5. I again tap the power button to enter standby. This time and all future times I see the cover for book B. Rarely I see the default screen saver and must enter and exit standby to see cover for book B.
Is this behavior what you see with CoolReader? In any event, I can't find a way to prevent it.

I have made it work on my Afterglow 2. I had to root the device and do some strange incantations to make the default screensaver in /system/media writable (I created a symlink). I didn't try creating the ScreenSaver directory.

The save cover feature will be in the Other settings section in the next beta, probably released today. You can save the cover anywhere you wish, as long as the destination is writable.

Thanks Chaley, I'll try to configure it in my Samsung Note 3 as soon as it's available. Ups! I'm not in the beta program, I'll wait for production release.
I don't know if it's going to be worth it in a high resolution phone, all the pictures with different sizes maybe aren't going to look nice as lock screen pictures.

Thanks.

What do you going to do? I ask because I couldn't find a way to tell any of my non-eink devices to automatically pick up the contents of a file and use it as a background. I had to do something manually after CC stored the file. Perhaps one of the wallpaper managers can do it.

I confess that I didn't look at the APIs that CC could use to set screensavers and the like. That isn't something I want to add to CC.

I've edited my former message adding something more.

I thought I could configure a directory to use the pictures there as lock screen, something similar to desktop images on Windows, but I haven't really looked at it.
Don't bother looking at it if it's not possible, I don't really use the phone to read, I have a Kobo that implements that function automatically, it's just something I would like if it's possible, but I'm not going to spend a lot of time looking at it, and as I've said before, if it's going to look awkward because of the different pictures sizes, I'll discard the idea.

@milady133: I just tried it on a device where I run the live wallpaper app Multipicture Live. That app lets you specify a single file for the lock screen background as well as for the various home screens. I set up CC to save the cover in /sdcard/Pictures/cover.jpg (/sdcard is the device's internal memory). I then told Multipicture Live to use that file as the lock screen background and also to redisplay the image if the file changes, and for good measure to reduce the opacity to 60%. Works perfectly.

Cool Reader does not support lockscreen change in T62+ it used to work with nook touch only.

It is working like you said need to go into standby 2 times to get the latest image but I am ok with that now I have to figure out how to make the cover fill the whole screen.

On my energy systems pro+ (T62+ rebranded) it covers the full height of screen but is horizontal letterboxed (not full width) to preserve aspect ratio. I am using full-size covers in CC (settings / Covers and Thumbnails / 480) which might explain it.

Thanks Chaley. I configured it this weekend and it's working fine. I even didn't have to install an app, I just used the screen lock settings to point to the image, and it's all working fine.
The image can get cut depending on the dimensions, but I'm not going to bother adjusting the size of every cover to fit the phone screen, it's good enough for me. 👍

Thumbs up

I recently discovered the new "save cover to file" option and am quite happy with it so far
I have a rooted "Energy Sistem eReader Pro+", which seems to be essentially a Boyue T62.

I use my favorite automation tool "Automagic" (look for it in Play Store!) to pick up the saved cover file from CC, scale it to the appropriate dimensions of 1024*758, rotate it by 90° and then move it to /system/media/ with Automagics root functions. Works like magic!

However, the cover saved by CC seems to have a very low resolution
Would it be possible to extract the original cover from the ePub file and store it?
And, for good measure, store a text file next to it with the full path of the opened ePub? That would perhaps open some other possibilities for automation (or allow me to extract the cover).

I think that there is an easier way to do this. I have an Energy Sistem Pro+. All I had to do is tell CC to store the cover in /mnt/sdcard/ScreenSaver as shown in the following screen capture.

The screen saver image sometimes doesn't change until the second time the device is turned off (to standby, not power off), which doesn't bother me.

As for cover size: you have control over the size of the cover CC stores in its database. The default is quite low-res. I use the 480px size on my ESPro+ and it looks fine.

I am not going to change CC to do anything with book files besides pass the file name to a reader app. Some formats are very hard to work with, and TBH I don't see the general need.
