Starting Over after update on Paperwhite

OK, firstly apologies if this is in the wrong place.

My Paperwhite was 'sorted' how I thought I needed it - basically ignoring 'cloud' because, I thought, maybe incorrectly, that If I was not able to connect wirelessly, ie, whilst out and about etc. it was of no use to me.

However, since the recent 'upgrade' things are all over the place, and mostly in 'the cloud'. My collections on my device were no longer there but 'in the cloud', so, I attempted to construct my collections on my device, but everytime I tried to name a collection it would not let me saying already exists in the cloud! however, on going to the cloud - nothing there!!

It is such a mess. So I decided to start over by deleting everything via Calibre, which kind of worked except there were still 6 pages of books left on my device, however, some fiddling and I finally got 'books in main memory of device to show in Calibre, so decided to put those into Collections on the device - no that will not work either, still cannot name as I want because still telling me that collections is already in cloud.

What I would like to do is to just return to 'empty' and start over - most of my books have been added via Calibre and not through Amazon I understand the difference there.

Whilst posting, I also have 25 dictionaries in the cloud and several of them in foreign languages on my device which I cannot seem to delete.

Any help would be most appreciated as I am in such a mess and have decided to dedicate this weekend to getting it sorted.

If I remember right those are the default dictionaries. So just ignore them.

Ok, so I have made some new 'collections' on my device - still having to use a new name so 'James Patterson - Murder Club' now has 'on device' added to it as when I just try and use the original 'collection' it says I cannot because that name is already in use in the cloud, but, if it is, I can't find it?

Now these books were not purchased at Amazon, but put on to the Paperwhite via Calibre, so, I assume they will not get synced into the cloud along with the 'new' collection name - my device is telling me I have 75 collections in the cloud, but not possible to reach them on my Paperwhite even when attached by USB and using Wi Fi so totally bemused.

With regards to the Dictionaries, I understand they are all in the cloud but I want to get rid of those that have downloaded to my device, they are just in the way!

I read an article by HTG about jailbreaking my device to be able to use a 'Collections ap' from this site, but then realised it was posted in 2013 so not sure if this would still work on the new upgrade, never done that before?

I don't use collections, but I've read that de-registering and then re-registering the Kindle will bring back "missing" collections.

go to the Cloud tab and select 'Collections' from the first drop down list. This will show all the collections in the cloud. Long-tap on the ones you want and choose 'Add to Device' on the ensuing menu. Or you can delete any you don't want to use any more.

I have a similar problem - lost all my device collections and can't add them back. I've tried the de-register, re-register device trick, and still can't get them back. The only way I see them at all is when I select a title, long tap to get 'add to collection' and then I get a message about no collections on my device, go to cloud and add collections from there. So I switch to the cloud, see a list of collections down the left, tick boxes down the right, I tick them all and tap DONE at the bottom of the screen.
And....
nothing changes.
tried restarting several times. Nothing changes. Right now I'm trying another deregister/reregister to see if that will change anything.

Help?

This sounds like you are adding a book to multiple collections. What you want to do instead is add each collection to your device. You do this one collection at a time. The post just above yours tells how:

Thank you. That doesn't work. I go to Cloud tab and tap the Title/Author/Recent/Collections drop down list. It shows Collections greyed out.

The only way I can get them to show at all is what I said above: he only way I see them at all is when I select a title, long tap to get 'add to collection' and then I get a message about no collections on my device, go to cloud and add collections from there. So I switch to the cloud, see a list of collections down the left, tick boxes down the right, I tick them all and tap DONE at the bottom of the screen.

When I long tap on one collection name in this list I don't get a menu at all. I do get a check mark.

I've checked my software - it's up to date. I've de-reg/re-registered AGAIn. I even reset the silly thing. Collections are still broken. I've even contacted Amazon and am waiting. (Every time I try phone or chat they make me do everything I've already tried so this time I e-mailed.)

i think it may be actually broken. (glum)

You need to use the other drop down list, just to the left: All Items, Books, Periodicals, Docs, Active Content, Collections.

That will show just your cloud collections (assuming the cloud tab is selected at the far left). You then need to press and hold a collection name to bring up the menu to allow adding the collection to your Kindle.

sheepish... ok I'm blind, I admit it. I rarely use that tab so my eyes slide right over it.
Now I've got the collections back, yay! THANK YOU!!!

Is there a quick way to tell it to download everything in the cloud in a collection to the device? So far I'm only getting stuff to download when I tell it to Add to Home.

Open the collection, and tap each item that does not have a 'check' icon. This will start download for each. You can just queue them up this way, you don't need to wait for each to finish.

Only the iPhone/iPad Kindle app has a 'download everything' option after opening a collection. It isn't something that I find very useful, actually.
