Run Calibre Twice on the Same Computer
Hi.
I couldn't find a thread specifying this, but if I overlooked something I apologize. Can I run two different versions of Calibre on the same computer? Thanks |

I guess if you run them as two different users, with two different libraries, you could.
Don't think you can do it with the same user, and two users on the same library is asking for trouble. N. |

I just found an old thread where someone suggested the Portable version alongside the normal version.

No, you can't -- calibre is specifically designed to not open multiple times on the same user account.
The portable version is just a launcher program that opens the main calibre executable after setting some environment variables. As aleyx said, it's asking for trouble to open the same library for editing in two places at once. |

If you'll tell us what you want to do, we may be able to tell you how to do it with a minimal risk to your libraries.

It's okay, I'll borrow the hubby's computer and run Calibre from there instead. I would rather do that than risk trouble.

If you just want to Peek (Read only Library), the content server (the CLI standalone) can be run on another library at the same time the GUI is running. You use a standard web browser for that kind of peeking.
![]() The Library and related server, do not need to be on Your machine Hubby can run a Calibre Content server on his Library, and you can view it with your browser (Assumes you share a network) You can have Multiple Libraries on your computer and switch between them (library icon). They just can't be open in the GUI at the same time. Some tools, can do operations across Libraries : Find Duplicates PI, Copy to Library |

Is the question really about different libraries for different users. So when user a logs in they see library a, when they log out and user b logs in they see library b ?
That should work in windows 7, 8, 10 as all the data is in user specific locations. |

Instead of what? Rather than asking us how to run calibre 2x (a solution to a problem), perhaps you could start with what you are trying to accomplish (a problem), and then we can help you figure out how to do that. ![]() Always start with the problem you have, not your (perceived) solution. Then we don't have to make assumptions about what you need. |

Sigh.
That still doesn't explain what you actually want to do. What is your objective that will be solved by running two versions of calibre on your laptop? What goal are you trying to accomplish? Is your goal to be able to say "I run two parallel instances of calibre", for the bragging rights? Do you want to be able to look up things in different libraries? Do you want to compare libraries? Do you want to run the content server for a different library than the one you have open? |

I never run the servers via the GUI -- I have configured system services for them, they run at boot.

You do not have to run windows inside the virtual machine, you can run some Linux distribution. Legally. You still did not tell us why you want to run Calibre twice. |

I wanted to be able to use one library to download Fanfiction and the other to edit other stuff, like comics and books.
