How to configure how iBooks counts the pages left in a chapter.
I have seen some discussion on this subject but no firm conclusions. This concerns the 'pages left in chapter' feature on iBooks. This feature works perfectly well for a number of EPUBs but not for one. In this case, instead of displaying the number of pages left within an .xhtml file - the actual extent of the chapter - it counts pages until the next heading. This is a technical book with numerous headings in each chapter. Is there a way to configure how iBooks counts the pages in a chapter? I need it to disregard the headings and treat each .xhtml file as a separate chapter.

Perhaps it has to do with the type of heading. Does the book use different levels? h1, h2, h3, etc.
Are the headings linked in the ToC? Is it a multi-level ToC? |

Sorry for delay in replying. Yes there are multi levels of heading h1 to h3. They are all linked in the TOC, which has 3 levels with 3 levels of indent.

It depends on the TOC.xhtml file
I have discovered through trial and error, that iBooks takes all the items listed in the TOC.xhtml file to be chapters. So the way to make iBooks accurately state the number of pages left in the chapter, is to only include chapter headings in the TOC.xhtml, and to leave out headings of smaller sections.
It seems the tagging you use, whether a class of p tag, or an h1-6 tag doesn't affect it. |

Well, the ToC is meant to list chapters, so hardly surprising.
Either Sigil or calibre Editor can generate a ToC based on your choice of header tags. |

But if you include headings within chapters, the number of pages left in the chapter will not function correctly, it will just count the number of pages to the next heading listed in the to.xhtml

You have already stated you used different depths. And the ToC generators in Sigil and calibre editor allow you to specify which header tags will become ToC entries. In fact, calibre allows you to use XPath too, so you can go really wild. ![]() You can auto-regenerate a ToC that only uses the h1 tag, for example. |

Sigil's TOC tool allows you to specify H# levels to consider for TOC automatically, thus saving removing many tick marks
![]() It just take a bit of effort to learn what is included in your toolboxes ![]() |
