Unable to remove a book from Glo HD

Tried to remove a book only to get this message

Your Kobo is running an updated firmware/database version. As calibre does not know about this updated firmware, database editing is disabled, to prevent corruption. You can still send books to your Kobo with calibre, but deleting books and managing collections is disabled. If you are willing to experiment and know how to reset your Kobo to Factory defaults, you can override this check by right clicking the device icon in calibre and selecting "Configure this device" and then the "Attempt to support newer firmware" option. Doing so may require you to perform a factory reset of your Kobo.
Device database version: 121.
Device firmware version: (3, 17, 3)

Not had this before

Hmm, just added a book and got the same message even though the book was added.

Re read the message.
What does the first sentence say?
Oh!
Kobo updated your device to something Calibre / current installed Plugins do not know about / if they can still do what they did safely.

Have you done your Plugin updates?
or wait for the next release of Calibre?

Sigh; just tick the box in the Kobo driver options within calibre that says "Attempt to support newer firmware".

Something has changed. The firmware on the device was upgraded to 3.17.3. Calibre has been updated to support this, but there hasn't been a release yet. That should happen this week. In the meantime, you can safely follow the instructions in the message and all will work correctly.

The work around worked, thank you PeterT

Still don't know how it updated to 3.17.3 though, can't remember using the Kobo desktop for weeks, and that was to get 3.16, unless it went straight to 3.17

Kobo will also update via WiFi.... Is it possible that you had either done a sync via WiFi or have it set to do an automatic sync? (Settings | Syncing and updates)

Calibre 2.38 has full support for all Kobo e-ink devices and all released firmware versions. So...

Are you seeing the message you quoted? If so, can you check the versions displayed at the end of the message. They should be the same, but I want to confirm them.

Or are you just not seeing the series info when you disconnect the device? If that is it, the series info is set the next time you connect the device. And the options have to be set correctly.

Yes I had the same message. I clicked "Attempt to support newer firmware" option and now this is not showing when I connect my Kobo.
My shelves and series works fine but it doesn't change epub to kepub automatically when I transfer books.
This is probably my fault with just the wrong configuration but I can live with it.
Thank you for your help.

Exactly the same with the same database and firmware version? Support for firmware version 3.17.3 was added to calibre in version 2.36. It is working correctly here, so if you are running 2.38, I don't know what is happening. Seeing the full message might shine some light on it. This would be done by clicking the copy button when viewing the message details.

If books aren't being converted to kepubs during the send, then on of the following applies:

- The KoboTouchExtended driver is not installed or is disabled.
- The option to turn on most of the function in the KoboTouchExtended driver is not turned on.
- The conversion to to kepub is failing and you have the option to silently ignore failures set.
