Updating books with highlight and annotation

Some of my books have update available. It said: A corrected version of this book is available. The previous version will be replaced with the corrected version.

Does it mean that if I update, all my current highlight and annotations will be gone? Is there anyway to preserve it?

No, assuming your highlights/annotations are synced with your Kindle account they will be transferred converted over to the new version.

I don't believe that's correct. When you update a book, Amazon specifically warn you that you will lose your highlights and annotations.

This is the specific warning I get when I try to update a book in my Amazon account:

Before clicking update, please be sure the wireless and Whispersync for Books setting (or Annotations Backup settings for older Kindles) are turned on for each of your devices. Doing so will retain any highlights, notes, and furthest page read. You can check and adjust your Annotations Backup settings by navigating to the settings menu on your device. Perhaps I should emphasize the "assuming your highlights/annotations are synced with your Kindle account" part?

I wonder if it perhaps depends if it's a major or a minor update? I've definitely had emails from Amazon telling me that a book update is available and warning me that, if I accept the update, my annotations and highlights for the book will be lost!

I have never gotten an email... because I don't enable auto-updating.

Do you have syncing enabled? Since auto-update does not, by definition, give you a chance to put your affairs in order perhaps the email knew you had sync disabled.
