Update from Calibre
I am a new user so maybe there is something basic I am missing, but, today I added 9 title to Calibre, updated the Kindle Collections from the device, ejected the Kindle, started a wireless device in Calibre, started Calibre Companion on my phone, did Connect. The first time there were some screens about doing updates. But, when those were done and I looked at what was there, there were no books with a date after 25 July (might be the last time I did an update, although that seems a bit long) and when I specifically checked by author for new books they weren't there. So, I have now tried the whole thing again with pauses to make sure operations were complete, checking Calibre to see that top items in one of the collections were there and correct. This time when I connected in CC, I had a choice of connections ... apparently my wife is updating hers upstairs ... picked mine and any messages were very brief with no long updating screen. But, still the newest book shown is 25 July and the new books added today are not there.
Now what? |

Are you connecting as a wireless device or through the Content Server?
![]() And what does any of this have to do with syncing collections with your Kindle? |

Wireless device
The point of the Kindle is that I added 9 books today to Calibre from Kindle and updated the collections and I am not seeing those new books in CC |

This may be a stupid question... but have you actually sent those books to Calibre Companion?
... You keep mentioning "updating collections", is there some reason I am unaware of why using the Kindle Collections plugin would cause books to be sent to Calibre Companion? As it is, I am unsure why you expected anything to be sent to CC. Last edited by eschwartz; 08-17-2015 at 10:20 PM. Reason: typo |

Doesn't Kindle Collections only work on USB connected Kindles?
1)CC is being connected wirelessly 2)Kindle app would be a client(?) of CC, so Kindle collections would be buffered 3)does the KC plugin even work with non-dedicated Kindle (apps)? |

Are you using the Wireless or content server connections between CC and Calibre?
The wireless connection will automatically update metadata and can automatically update already loaded books they've been changed (if you've set preferences properly) but as far as I know there is no way to have CC automatically download new books from calibre. Wireless requires you to select the books on calibre and press send to device, the content server connection requires you to browse for and select the books to download from the content server using CC. |

ekbell -- see post #3. The OP is using the Wireless Device Driver, but has not confirmed actually sending the books.
Due to mention of "updating collections", I suspect no books were sent. Either that, or we are missing some important information here... |

@tamhas: did you want calibre to automatically send the new books to CC? If so, then this CC faq answer might be of interest: How can I get books to be automatically sent to CC when it connects as a wireless device?
If you were expecting something else then we all need more explanation. |

OK, so the base problem here is that I assumed that the update metadata boxes meant that it was supposed to automatically send new books. That *is* what I wish it would do. So, I guess the question is how best to manage this. Smart Eject seems a bit backward, i.e., why is the sync associated with eject? If anything, it should be associated with connect.
So, the question is how to manage this the most easily. One issue is that there are currently 39 out of 936 books in Calibre and not in the Kindle. These are books that my wife got that I know I never want to read for one reason or another. I have considered creating a new collection for them on the Kindle so that I don't have to worry about such issues, but that is not a 100% solution since it also includes a couple of PDFs which I have been unable to translate to useful MOBI so I can't really put them on the Kindle. So, is the right thing to do is each time I add books, which tends to be in a block, when I am done, sort by date, highlight everything since the last update (which should just be the current date, if I do this regularly, deselect anything not on the Kindle, and the right click and send to device main memory? I just did that and it seems to work with all of the top books now showing on device and them showing up on the phone. With another sort, I see that I have books in CC which are not on the Kindle. So, I selected them and did a right click and remove matching books from device and it appears to have worked. Guess I'm getting the hang of this. Thanks all. |

BTW, the reading list approach works for my wife, but I am expecting to the bulk of my reading on the Kindle. The CC on the phone is just to give me access to the metadata in order to decide what book to read. So, one of my goals is to have the books in CC match those on the Kindle - same order, same grouping, etc.

Smart Eject works that way because it assumes that you did things while you were connected and that you want the device to reflect what you did. Reading List checks on connect. Your steps for making the books in CC be the same as the kindle are fine. You might be able to make the process more reliable by creating a custom Yes/No column named (for example) #onkindle. After connecting your kindle and sending books, etc, before you disconnect select all books in your library, use bulk metadata edit to clear #onkindle to empty, search ondevice:true, select everything found, then use bulk edit to set #onkindle to Yes. Now when you connect CC you can know what is on your kindle and do the operations you described to make CC match it. |

@eschwartz: Sometime after we had that discussion Kovid and I added TXT to Add Books / Add empty file. You would search "not format:txt", select all, then Add Books / Add an empty file to selected books / TXT file". The added file isn't really empty because Kovid wanted the title and author in it but it is very small, and in any event the process is a lot easier to describe than running python scripts.
